Classic Chocolate Cake With Chocolate Frosting

Ingredients

Chocolate Cake Batter

  • 1 1/2 cups milk or buttermilk
  • 2 Tbsp. lemon juice omit if using buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cups baking cocoa regular or dark

Chocolate Frosting

  • 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 1/3 cup baking cocoa
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2-3 Tbsp. milk

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
    Grease a 9x13" baking pan (see notes for baking in different-sized cake pans).
  • Combine milk and lemon juice in a small bowl. Set aside.
  • Beat butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla together until smooth.
  • Add milk and beat until combined.
  • Add baking soda, salt, baking cocoa, and flour. Beat on low for 30 seconds then on med-high for 3 minutes. Scrape sides with a rubber spatula, as necessary.
  • Pour batter into the prepared baking pan. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Allow cake to cool completely.
  • Beat frosting ingredients together. Spread over cake. Sprinkle with sprinkles, if desired.

Notes

Baking times for various baking pans:
  • 9x13" pan: 30-35 minutes.
  • 2 round pans: 25-30 minutes.
  • Bundt pan: 40-45 minutes.
  • Cupcakes: 18-20 minutes.
