Tips and Tricks
How to separate the layers: Layering beverages works because drinks with higher sugar content are denser and will naturally sink lighter ones below. To create distinct layers, start with the sweetest (heaviest) drink on the bottom, followed by medium-sugar beverages in the middle, and the lightest or diet drinks on top.
Pour slowly for clean layers: Pour each layer over the back of a spoon to gently disperse the liquid and help keep the colors separated.
Keep everything well chilled: Cold ingredients are less likely to mix together, resulting in more distinct red, white, and blue layers.
Pour gently over ice in each cup: Add ice first, then slowly pour the punch over it so the layers stay as distinct as possible when served individually.
Tips for large quantities: If serving a crowd, use a wide, clear pitcher or glass container. This not only makes the layers more visible for a dramatic presentation, but also gives you more control when pouring each layer slowly.
Bold colors: This tip is completely optional, but if your blue beverage isn't the shade you are looking for, you can add a drop or 2 of food coloring into the bottle and give it a shake before pouring. This is how I achieved a darker blue layer than the aqua-colored Gatorade that I used.
