Chocolate Frozen Bananas
Chocolate frozen bananas are a treat from my childhood. My mom would buy the kits sold in the produce section of the grocery store and I remember always being so excited when we’d make these. You don’t need a kit to make your own chocolate-dipped bananas and you don’t need to go to the fair to enjoy one of these delicious treats. You can make them at home with a few simple ingredients.
Chocolate Frozen Banana Ingredients
This recipe makes 10 chocolate banana treats. (Scroll to the end for an easy-to-follow printable version.)
Chocolate
Let’s talk about chocolate for a minute. You can use a variety of different types of chocolate such as almond bark, melting wafers (Wilton or Ghirardelli), chocolate bars, or chocolate chips. I prefer using chocolate chips because I like the flavor of them vs. almond bark, but it really doesn’t matter. When I use chocolate chips I add a bit of coconut oil to the chocolate as I melt it down. It creates the perfect dipping consistency.
You’ll need 12 ounces of chocolate chips (1 bag) + 1 Tbsp. coconut oil.
Bananas
Bananas, obviously. Avoid bananas that are overly ripe. I find that bananas with a hint of green are perfect. They are sweet, but still sturdy enough for dipping.
You’ll need 5 bananas cut in half.
Toppings
This is where your creativity can shine! These bananas are delicious simply dipped in chocolate, but if you’d like to take up a notch here are some topping ideas:
- chocolate sprinkles
- mini chocolate chips
- rainbow sprinkles
- chopped peanut (or any kind of nut)
- mini M&Ms
- chocolate or white chocolate drizzle
How To Make Chocolate Frozen Bananas
Step 1: Peel 5 bananas and cut them in half.
Step 2: Place a popsicle stick into the bottom of each banana.
Step 3: Place bananas on a wax paper-lined baking sheet.
Step 4: Freeze bananas for 30-60 minutes. Bananas can be dipped fresh or slightly cold, but I find that freezing them for at least 30 minutes makes for easier dipping and the bananas won’t slide off of the sticks as easily.
Step 5: Melt chocolate and coconut oil in a double boiler or in the microwave. If using the microwave, heat chocolate for 30 seconds and stir. Repeat heating in 15-20 second intervals until melted and smooth.
Step 6: Dip bananas in chocolate or spoon chocolate over frozen bananas. Dipping the chocolate is faster, but spooning the chocolate over the bananas is a better way to make the chocolate go farther, and if your bananas aren’t completely frozen they won’t fall off of the sticks. Sprinkle toppings over dipped bananas and place them back onto the baking sheet.
Step 7: Return bananas to the freezer and freeze until chocolate is set.
I think these are best eaten on day 1 or day 2. So delicious, so easy, and so GOOD.
