Hot honey lemonade is perfect to sip while sick or on a cold day. This is my grandma’s recipe and she would make it for me when I was little. Many sore throats were soothed with this hot lemonade.

Many of my fondest childhood memories were at my grandma’s house. She was so kind and nurturing to my siblings and I. She’d always stock her refrigerator with our favorite things, always had our favorite cereal, played games with us, and was always present. She was also very patient as she’d let my sister and I help her in the kitchen, and as she helped us with sewing projects.
Grandma’s Hot Honey Lemonade
I remember being under the weather quite a few times at her house and she always had what we needed to feel better; a heating pad, Children’s Tylenol, saline spray, and always a cup of hot lemonade. I liked hot lemonade even when I wasn’t feeling sick, and would often make it instead of hot Ovaltine at her house. It’s sweet, tangy, and delicious.
It wasn’t until I was an adult that I found out that Grandma’s hot lemonade was a tried and true way to soothe coughs and sniffles for years and years in other families too. Some call it honey lemon tea, hot lemonade, or simply lemon tea.

Hot Lemonade Ingredients

Hot/boiling water: You’ll want hot water instead of cold water for this drink. Hot water is soothing on a sore throat and helps the honey dissolve. You’ll need 8 oz.
Lemon juice: You can use bottled juice or fresh lemon juice. I prefer fresh lemon juice, but my grandma used bottled lemon juice. Lemons have vitamin C and can help break down mucus. The juice of 1 lemon or 3 Tbsp. of bottled lemon juice is just about right.
Honey: Honey is preferred in this recipe for its health benefits. Honey coats your throat, which can help suppress a cough. It also has antibacterial properties and is soothing for a sore throat. We use about a tablespoon of honey, but you can use more or less to taste.
How To Make Hot Honey Lemonade
Step 1: Squeeze lemon juice into a mug.
Step 2: Squeeze honey into the mug.
Step 3: Pour hot/boiling water over lemon juice and honey and stir.
How to Store Hot Lemonade
You can make a large batch of hot honey lemonade and store the leftovers in the refrigerator. Let it come to room temperature and then transfer to a container. Reheat by microwaving a single cup portion or heating to a simmer over the stove.
