Make a Stylish Fabric Wired Headband!

    October 22, 2018 By Brandy 6 Comments

A fabric wired headband is a quick and easy sewing project for kids! It makes a great gift and there are so many cute ways to wear it!

The girls came home with a couple of wired headbands that they made at a friend's house a few weeks ago. They looked SO cute wearing them, and a 5-second inspection revealed that there really wasn't much to them! Fabric and a piece of wire. So simple, so easy, and so cute.

Ruby wore hers to school almost every day the following week so I thought it would be fun to make a bunch more to keep in her hair accessory drawer.

There are so many darling ways to wear the wired headband, and it stays tied because of the wire! Just a quick over-under and pull. No knot necessary!

I have a pretty nice scrap fabric stash leftover from my book and all of these cute prints came from that. My husband had wire in the garage and we were all set!

For my little friends, a wired headband is a great beginner sewing project!

Just straight line sewing. Make a bunch for yourself and to give as gifts. We used Halloween and Christmas fabric. Do you have a friend who would like to receive one as a Christmas gift? Let's get started!

    Wired Headband Tutorial

    skill level: beginner

    time: 10-20 minutes

A wired headband is a quick and easy sewing project for kids! It makes a great gift and there are so many cute ways to wear it!

    supplies:

    1 (4" x 30") piece of cotton fabric

    1 (28") piece of 0.020 wire.* )

*this was the kind that my husband had in his garage. Any 0.020 wire (nylon covered or stainless steel whether it is labeled for crafting or not) would be fine.

    Step 1:

Fold the rectangle of fabric in half so that it looks like a skinny tube. Make sure that the right side of the fabric is on the inside and the wrong side of the fabric is facing you.

    Step 2:

Line up the edge of the fabric with the pressure foot on your sewing machine and sew the side of the tube.

    Step 3.

Turn the tube right side out. The safety pin trick works really well for this!

    Step 4:

Iron the tube flat, with the seam that you just sewed on the side.

    Step 6:

Fold the ends of the wire over a bit so that they are no longer sharp.

    Step 7:

Slide the wire into the tube. It should have about an inch of space on either end.

    Step 8:

Fold the open ends of the tube over about ½" and pin.

    Step 9:

Stitch around the entire tube using a ⅛" seam allowance. Make sure that the wire isn't near the edges while you sew (you don't want to break a needle!).

Step 10: Trim any loose threads.

    All done!

These are really easy to make assembly-line style!

Ruby was gracious enough to demonstrate how she likes wearing a wired headband...how would you style yours?

Your daughter has the cutest smile ever Brandy and I love your headband tutorial too. My daughter has just cut her hair really short but she still wears headbands when her long fringe starts irritating her. I'll have to show her this so she can make a few
