Homemade Science Kits for Kids With Printable Instructions

    December 5, 2010 By Brandy 28 Comments

These science kits for kids are easy to put together using household ingredients! They even come with printable instructions. Bobbing raisins, Invisible Ink, Wriggle Worms and more! Package them all up in baggies and put in a tote for a fun and educational gift or summer activity for kids.

Today I'm sharing a homemade gift idea that we did for my sister's family. A  Science Kit for my nieces and nephews! Science kits for kids are always fun, and this one was fairly inexpensive since it was homemade and uses every day items!

plastic black cauldron filled with science kits
laminated science instructions and recipe cards
I went to this site and found a bunch of projects that I thought would be fun to try. They were all found under the "reactions" page. Then I made "recipe" cards, laminated them, and put them on a ring.
plastic bags filled with science experiment ingredients
Each card matches a ziploc bag with all of the supplies needed to do the experiment. There were 12 or so projects. I made a pdf version of the cards. They aren't anything special, but feel free to use them if you'd like. Just cut out the recipes and mount on cardstock.
plastic cup and raisins and can of soda
Some of the ones we included were:
(click below to be linked to each experiment)
    Bobbing for Raisins
    Wriggle Worms
    Soapy Froth
    Rocket Bottle
    Runaway Pepper
    Flarp
    Invisible Ink
    Shiny Coins
We spend an evening trying these out ourselves and had a great time!
3 pairs of safety goggles and bag of skittles
Goggles, and some fun candy! Have you seen the fizzy Skittles? They don't taste that great, but do fizz up in your mouth. My kids liked that.
lemon juice and paper and paint brushes
I grabbed this Mystical Tree and Lakeshore Learning. We picked one out for ourself. The kids had a great time watching it grow and it made for some pretty fall decor.
color tree science kit in box
This was such a fun gift to put together. A little time consuming, but so worth it. My sister's family is so creative and active. We couldn't think of a more perfect family to make this for.
    wrapped science kit gift
How does one wrap a huge cauldron? This is all I could think of without using an entire roll of wrapping paper 😉

Oh me, oh my, you are my new favorite! A science kit for Christmas? I'm so promoting this on my STEM Mom site! My son, and my nephews are getting these for Christmas! Anytime we can encourage exploration and make science fun, we should!

This is the PERFECT gift and I have time to assemble it all before Christmas!

Yeah, I'm the cool aunt! (he-he)

Thank you SO much for this awesome idea! I was stumped when it came to buying a gift for my nephew's birthday, mainly because he already has everything! This was the PERFECT answer to my dilemma. I couldn't find the right sized cauldron so I used a big black bucket instead (only $2!) and I covered the top of it with a mound of bubble wrap to make it look like it was bubbling over.

I gave you credit for the idea when I posted my pics on facebook. 🙂

Love it! Really clever. Btw you can buy large gift bags at the dollar store. It comes with string to tie it and a gift card. Just for future reference if you ever need to "wrap" something giant without using up all the paper. =)

Awesome! I'm going to do this for Brayden! We buy him a new science kit each year and he loves everything from them. It will be really fun to have all the stuff in bags all ready for him to do! Thanks! Actually, I may have to make one for each of the kids because they are always wanting to see what his experiements are. 🙂
