Create a personalized gift with oil based Sharpie pens! Decorate porcelain platters, bowls, or mugs for a one of a kind gift this year! We made a Father’s Day grill platter and baked it in the oven to set the paint. Make sure to hand wash it to make it last! This post contains an affiliate link.
The verdict?  The colors held up very well with minimal changing, and the platter has held up to being washed! I even scratched the paint surface with my fingernail with no chipping or flaking off. Only time will tell as far as durability goes, but I intend to only hand wash it just to be safe.
Father’s Day Grill Platter
Supplies:
Oil Based Sharpie Pens (I bought mine here)*
Porcelain Platter (Better Homes and Gardens from Walmart $9.97)
Rubbing Alcohol
Paper Towel
*Our platter is HAND WASH ONLY. For a permanent dishwasher-safe finish use these paint and bake paints for porcelain and china. Not as easy as pens, but will stand the test of time!
Steps for Making a Personalized Grill Platter
- Wipe the surface with rubbing alcohol. This removed any debris or oils from our fingerprints. The cleaner the surface is, the better the paint will stick.
We used a porcelain platter from Walmart. If we made a mistake we just wiped it off with rubbing alcohol and started again. Good as new!
4. Heat 350 degrees and set a timer for 30 minutes. After baking leave the platter in the oven, turn the oven off and allow it to cool completely. This will take a few hours.
I found these sites helpful in coming up with my baking and drying times.

Update: 04/18—It’s been 3 years and our gill platter is over all still in great shape, a few of the letters have faded or come off. We always hand washed it so all-in-all we’re happy that it lasted a few years. I wouldn’t call the paint pens a permanent solution, but they do last awhile. If you are looking for a permanent paint you can try these paint and bake paints for porcelain and china.

Adorable project. My hubby’s favorite food is burgers on the grill but I’m the griller and cook in our family. Thanks for sharing with Small Victories Sunday Linkup. Pinned to our linkup board.

This is such a clever idea! I love that it is easy enough that we could make one for all of the grandpas too. Looks like everyone is getting a grill platter this year. Lol. Thanks for sharing your awesome DIY with us at Merry Monday this week!

Having a ‘3 years on’ up date is SO helpful. I often wonder how projects like this last so some real life feedback is much appreciated. Thanks. Oh and it’s a super cute idea too!!

Love it-this is really a neat idea!

This may be a stupid question but can you use acrylic paint instead of oil based sharpies?
Brandy says
Hi Jessica! Unfortunately acrylic paint will wash/chip right off when it gets wet. It needs to be an oil based type of paint. Hope that helps! 🙂
Danielle says
Can you use the oil based sharpies to draw on your child’s hand for hand prints on the platter?
Brandy says
Hi Danielle! Hmm, I’m honestly not sure. It would be darling if that worked, but I’m thinking they might dry too quickly.
Kathryn Elliott says
Hi Brandy! We just put our platter into the oven. Cold oven set at 350 degrees. But I have a question. Do we start timing the 30 minutes when it’s placed in the cold oven or start timing when it reaches 350??? Thanks for your help!
Brandy says
When it reaches 350 degrees start the timer for 30 minutes. Good luck!

Is it possible to erase or chip off the paint after the dish has been baked? I made these for hubby and three grandfathers, but kind of want to switch the names I put on them now… anyone know if I can chip it off and write in it and bake again without ruining the whole project?
This was a perfect Father’s Day craft! Thanks for sharing!
Brandy says
Hi Moe! The paint can be chipped or scratched off. This is why they should always be hand washed to make them last. So you should be able to scratch the name off. Hope that helps!
