    Why I Like This Recipe

Homemade and semi-homemade versions. Use boxed brownie mix or make your own---either way, these will turn out cute! I'll share my brownie recipe below. They are fudgy and delicious---just like cosmic brownies.

Cute and easy. Regardless of whether or not you use my recipe or a box mix, after the brownies have been sliced into squares, you’ll add candy eyes and Oreo cookie bat wings to the top of the brownies!

Perfect for Halloween parties. One batch makes 20 bat brownies, perfect for sharing with friends.

    Tips and Tricks

    1. Use parchment paper in the baking pan. This is a trick for any recipe that needs to be cut into squares and removed from the pan. Line the baking sheet with parchment paper, with at least an inch hanging over each side. Once the brownies cool, it's easy to peel off the paper and remove the entire pan of brownies at the same time. Transfer to a cutting board and slice into squares.
    2. Best eaten within a day. Because the Oreo wings are exposed to the air, they will eventually soften. Bat brownies are best eaten within 24 hours.

    Ingredients

Bowls of flour, sugar, brown sugar, salt, coco powder, 2 eggs, bottle of milk, stack of oreos, chocolate chips, jar of honey, bowl of brown sugar, bottle of vanilla and stick of butter.

    Brownies

    • Butter: I prefer salted, but you can use unsalted butter too.
    • Sugar: I use a combination of granulated sugar and brown sugar for moisture and texture.
    • Eggs
    • Vanilla extract
    • All-purpose flour
    • Baking cocoa (cocoa powder): I like using a 50/50 blend of Hershey's special dark and regular baking cocoa for a rich, but not overpowering flavor.
    • Salt

    Glaze

    • Semi-sweet chocolate chips
    • Butter
    • Honey (or light corn syrup)
    • Milk

    Decorations

    • Oreo cookies: You only need 10 cookies, but sometimes they break when you cut them, so it's a good idea to have a few extras.
    • Candy eyes

    Bat Brownies FAQs

Can you make bat brownies with brownie mix?

Yes, you can absolutely use a boxed mix. You can also use chocolate frosting instead of ganache for a quick and easy version.

What is the best baking cocoa for brownies?

I always use a 50/50 blend of Hershey's Special Dark baking cocoa and regular baking cocoa. It gives brownies a rich chocolate flavor without being overpowering.

    How do you store brownies?

Because these brownies have a soft ganache glaze, they can be stored at room temperature if the temperature isn't too warm or chilled in the refrigerator.

    Ingredients

    Brownies

    • ½ cup butter melted
    • 1 cup sugar
    • ¼ cup brown sugar
    • 2 large eggs
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla
    • ⅔ cup flour
    • ⅓ cup cocoa powder
    • 1 teaspoon salt

    Glaze

    • 12 oz. bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips
    • 4 Tbsp. butter
    • 2 Tbsp. honey (or light corn syrup)
    • 2 Tbsp. milk

    Decorations

    • 12-16 Oreo cookies (you only need 10, but sometimes they break when you cut them so it's a good idea to have a few extras)
    • candy eyes

    Instructions

    • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
    • Prepare a 9″x13″ baking dish with parchment paper and spray with nonstick cooking spray.
    • Note: You’ll want to leave an inch or two of parchment paper over the edge on each end so that you can lift the brownies out of the pan later on.
    • In a large mixing bowl mix melted butter, sugar, and brown sugar. Mix until creamed and smooth. This can be done by hand (with a Danish dough hook) or with an electric mixer on low speed until just combined.
    • Add eggs and vanilla. Mix.
    • Add flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Mix.
    • Pour brownie batter into the prepared baking dish. Spread with a rubber spatula.
    • Bake brownies for 23-25 minutes. Brownies may seem undercooked, but that is fine. They will continue to bake in the pan while it cools.
    • Let brownies cool for 30 minutes (they might still be warm, and that's fine). While they sit, make the ganache.
Combine ganache ingredients and melt on the stovetop over medium-low heat OR in the microwave in 15-20 second intervals, stirring in between each interval until melted and smooth.
    • Pour ganache over brownies and spread until smooth. Let brownies sit for 1 hour at room temperature, then chill for 1 hour in the refrigerator.  The glaze should be set enough to slice, but soft enough to still press the decorations into it.
    • Lift the brownies from the pan, using the parchment paper, and set them on a cutting board. Use a sharp knife to trim the edges and slice them into 20 squares.

    HOW TO DECORATE BAT BROWNIES

    • Separate Oreo cookies, scraping out the filling. Cut each cookie in half using a sharp knife.
    • Press 2 candy eyes and 2 Oreo wings into each brownie.

    Notes

Store brownies at room temperature in an airtight container or cover them with plastic.
