Simple Valentine’s Day Topiary

Filed Under: Craft Tutorials, Holidays, Valentine's Day

valentine topiary on console table
I had a lot of fun putting this topiary together. I first saw the cupcake liner idea on here, and decided to make a topiary instead of a wreath. I found these cute liners at IKEA last year and forgot about them…until today!

I know that everyone uses styrofoam balls, but I didn’t have any. So I balled up some newspaper and secured it with packing tape. Perfect…and free!
two balls of newspaper
Then I began hot gluing the liners to the newspaper ball. Simple as that. The other ball will be used in another project that I will share another day.
I had some flower pots in the shed, so I grabbed one and painted it black, then sprayed it with a clear coat and added black beans to hold the dowel in place.

Added a ribbon and some contact paper trim to the pot (cut with my cricut), and I was done!

I love your blog I am a new follower. I love that you used newspaper for your topiary that is what I do! I can’t see spending money on those foam balls. I made an ornament with a ball of newspaper and shells and pearls.

    I love this!
1st: Brilliant way to eliminate the cost of the styrofoam ball (their not so cheap)!
    2nd: Cupcake papers-inspired!
3rd: Black beans for the anchor! Again brilliant!
    Kudo’s to you!

What a great idea! I just found your blog and am following now.

If I can find black papers (shouldn’t be too hard), I’m going to use this to make a mickey ear topiary thing for my daughters 2nd birthday. I was going to use styrofoam but they are actually pretty expensive.

I love that you used rolled up newspaper because I HATE the sound that styrofoam makes and there are so many cute things to do with them. Your post also answers the question, I had, on wither or not you can put contact paper in a Cricut. Thanks!
