There are only a few hot chocolate brands that I like. My favorite indulgent hot cocoa is from Starbucks. Nothing compares to it, and how can it? Made with mocha sauce, vanilla syrup and frothy milk—it is absolutely perfect. I’d like to enjoy one every day, but am not willing to spend $3 and 320 calories on it. I also like the Starbucks hot cocoa mix that is made using milk, but I wanted to come up with something with less sugar.
Rich & Creamy Skinny Hot Cocoa recipe
It took me several tries to come up with a skinny hot cocoa that I liked, but this skinny hot cocoa is simply delicious! 108 calories, dairy free (can also be made with skim milk) and sweetened with vanilla syrup and pure maple syrup.
I’m not even going to say that it tastes just like Starbucks, because it’s different, but coming from a hot cocoa snob— I encourage you to try it if you are looking for a way to satisfy your chocolate craving. A cozy way to start or end your day.
You can totally make this using milk, but if you are looking for the 108 calorie version you’ll need to stick with unsweetened almond milk. I’ve started using unsweetened almond milk in baking and my flavored beverages because I really can’t tell the difference, and it comes in at 30 calories a cup. As for sweeteners, any kind of pure maple syrup will work, and I totally copy Starbucks and use vanilla syrup. I accidentally bought sugar free awhile back and it’s worked out well.
Did I mention that this is for a 10 oz. mug? Plenty to fill you up.
I’ll share how to make the microwave version (10 oz. cup) below, but will also share how to make it on the stove.
