Homemade Minnie Mouse Costume

homemade minnie mouse costume with a darling knit fabric.Isn’t this baby just scrumptious? She loves Mickey and Minnie and this comfy knit dress doubles perfectly as a Minnie Mouse costume too.

I didn’t have a pattern for this dress so I used one of  her knit play dresses as a guide. It worked out perfectly! Since it is knit I didn’t have to add buttons or a zipper. I just slips over her head!

I lined the bodice with another layer of knit to make it nice and sturdy. This knit was found at Girl Charlee fabrics for $5.75. One yard was plenty.

I made the skirt extra wide and gathered it so that she could do lots of twirling. She loves how it flows when she walks around. Nice and roomy and feminine!

One of my favorite parts is the trim! I found this ready to go pleated trim at Wholeport. I simply sewed it along the bottom and around the sleeves.

The ears were purchased on e-bay and the shoes are a hand-me-down from a cousin that received a second life with this little gal. She’s been wearing them 24/7. And why wouldn’t she? They have tiny heels! We will add her red pea coat for Halloween night to keep her warm and I am going to see about finding some little white gloves.

The best part?

She loves the dress so much that she’s already worn it several times. I don’t mind spending the time to sew a costume if it is going to get used all year long!

  1. What an adorable costume, Love It

  2. Love Love Love it and she is so adorable in it!!!!

  3. this is so cute… reminds me of when I used to make costumes for my own kids.. when they were babies I’d buy doggie or other animal footed- sleeper type costumes, then they could sleep in them until they were outgrown… a princess dress/minnie mouse dress that they can wear over and over? Great Idea!! love your blog

    • Thank you Carol! My grandma had a box of costumes that she saved from her girls and we always had fun borrowing those for Halloween. It doesn’t seem like we’ve been able to re-use the ones I’ve made with my children so this one worked out great! It should get lots of use! Thank you for your sweet comment!

  4. I’m so glad the shoes worked out. Sorry they’re so thrashed. Obviously they were loved. I know this doesn’t help now, but when London was Minnie for Halloween when she was Ruby’s age, we used the cheap-o white cotton knit gloves from the $1 store and I just drew 3 little black lines on them like Minnie’s. They were perfect

    • She doesn’t care that they were worn. She’s worn them so much more ever since. We had to throw them in the washing machine and that took some of the yellow off of the heels. She doesn’t care though. They have heels and that’s what is important to her, lol. And she gets comments wherever she goes. We got her a little pink pair for Christmas (Minnie with little heels). She is going to love them!
