    Homemade Bean Bag Chair

Making your own beanbag chair might seen intimidating, but it's actually a fun project! What kid (or adult) wouldn't want their own bean bag chair? This bean bag pattern comes in two sizes! For kids or adults. You can make a liner/insert and fill it with bean bag pellets, or simply make the outer shell and fill the inside with stuffed animals! The stuffed animals are cozy and are an inexpensive filler, and it provides toy storage at the same time.

    homemade bean bag chair

This bean bag chair was made by sewing up a liner, filling it with styrofoam pellets, then placing the liner inside of the outer cover. The cover is washable and easy to remove if something gets spilled. I love that it doesn't require sewing in a zipper, just velcro! It does not include instructions for adding a fabric handle, but that would be easy to do before filling it up with the foam filler pellets.

    Bean Bag Chair Sewing Pattern

It took me about 2 hours to make the kid size chair and I foresee more in the future. The pattern is a free one from Stardust shoes. I did not create it or claim ownership of it. The original website is no longer around, but I still had a copy of the pdf pattern and instructions so I'm sharing it here. If I ever find that it is being hosted on their website again, I'll link to the website.

Best Fabrics To Use For a Kids Bean Bag Chair

    • Outer layer: home decor fabric, canvas, lightweight upholstery fabric or denim, corduroy (lots of different fabrics would work, you just want something sturdy).
    • Inner lining: cotton, muslin (I used broadcloth, but an old sheet would work great!)

The shell has a velcro closure to make it easy to take off and wash. You can use batting or styrofoam pellets. I chose to go that route. I found a big bag for about $12 at Walmart.

It’s been so long, but I’m pretty sure it was 45” wide.

great beanbag pattern, I'm making it for my grandson, but one part of the instructions was confusing me. Since I'm a long-time sewer I thought, you might want to clarify this in the instructions. You need 2 strips 32 in by 2 1/2 in and that when you are sewing on the velcro part you sew it through both layers.

Hi Karen! It’s been a long time since I made one, but I think I remember. Yes, fold over the end, then fold it in half. Sew the Velcro to the strip, through both layers.

Then make a second strip, folded the same way and are the other half of the Velcro to that strip. Hope that helps a bit!

      Hi there,

I ordered a beanbag that is 36" in diameter, and am just wondering if the kid size cover will fit it nicely?

      Many thanks

Hi Brenna! I can’t remember the dimensions exactly, and got rid of the beanbag that you see in the photos a couple of years ago. I want to say that it was smaller than that, but I’m not sure. I’m sorry!

The kid size pattern is for what age child? I need to make one for a 5-year-old boy. Just curious as to what is approximately the finished size. Thank you.

Hi! My daughter in the photos was 2 years old, if that helps. I no longer have the bean bag chair that I made in these photos (taken in 2013). She used it for a few years! I did not create the original pattern, only linked to it so I don’t have exact measurements unless I were to make it again. I’m sorry!

I have printed out your pattern but it does not have the exact dimensions on it. It printed on 8 1/2' X 11' paper. Does anyone know what the actual dimensions for the pieces are?

Hi Patricia! I'm sorry I don't have a video for the bean bags and the tutorial wasn't my own. I just followed it when I made my bags!

I don't have the bean bag anymore, this is an old post, so I'm not sure what the final dimensions ended up being.

I would have thought syrofoam beads were more expensive than that... For $12, I will seriously think about making one... but I will probably try to reinvent the wheel, cuz thats just what I do. Found you on Tatertots and Jello.

I will need to check out Walmart - whenever I looked at the beans they were more expensive than that so I passed on this project. Thank you for the heads up! It turned out great! Saw you on TT&J

I just checked into it. It looks like none of the Michael Miller tutorials are coming up right now. Hopefully it is a glitch that they can fix quickly. I will have to see if I can find it another way. Thank you for letting me know!

The Michael Miller site is down right now for the tutorials. It did that a few months ago, but then fixed itself and is now down again. I have no idea what is going on, but it is frustrating because they have some awesome tutorials! I will let you know if I see that they are working again!

So cute!!! The Walmart you got the pellets at ~ is this a regular store or one with a fabric section? Just curious what section of the store you found these. Thanks!

        Thank you Karen!

This Walmart had a fabric section, but I actually found the bags of pellets in the furniture section! They sell bean bags chairs and the bags of pellets are right next to them and the slipcovers to go over them. At the one I went to, it was by all of the college/dorm type furniture/lamps and alarm clocks. So even if yours doesn't have a fabric section, you would probably still be able to find the pellets!
