I love beautiful little nightgowns. She does too, and she was thrilled with how it turned out. For a little girl who likes wearing dresses every day it just makes since to have a dress for pajamas too.
The reason this nightgown is such a quick project is the fact that it doesn’t require notions. No buttons, snaps, or zippers. Just some elastic. The pattern consists of one sleeve piece and two rectangles for the dress. That’s it! When I say that this is a one hour project, I’m not kidding. I used the Peasant Pocket Dress from Whimsy Couture. You can pick it up for under $5, and trust me, it’s the best $5 you’ll ever spend. You will find so many great uses from this one simple pattern. 1 Hour Girls Nightgown Without a Zipper or Buttons
It’s called a pattern, but technically it’s a tutorial. The pattern piece is ONE piece which helps you cut the under arm curve. Awesome right? You don’t need to cut out pattern pieces, tape anything together or use a ton of printer paper and ink. Just follow the measurement chart, cut out a few rectangles and go!
The cutting guide shows measurements for long, 3/4 and short sleeves. You can also add as much length as you want to create a knee length or ankle length nightgown.

Last year I made my girls each a flannel peasant nightgown and added lace trim. They were still done in about an hour and I even found a darling tutorial for making night caps! We had just finished reading The Long Winter (Little House on the Prairie) and they were so excited to have cozy nightgowns and night caps just like Mary and Laura. I even paired it with a tin cup, peppermint candy sticks, small cake pan and a Little House on the Prairie cookbook.

Hi Brittany! The only thing I did was extend the length to the floor for a nice, long nightgown. So just add inches to the main rectangular piece of the pattern! Good luck!
what about the sleeves? how do you make those?
Those are in the pattern from Whimsy Couture as well! You just lengthen the fabric for the longer sleeves 🙂

Hi! The pattern says intermediate to advanced sewing skills required… but gee, it doesn’t look *that* hard. I would consider myself a non-beginner, maybe intermediate…. but I am scared off by that pattern description. What’s your take?
No, definitely not! I think its a very basic pattern and you’d be just fine!
I have never ordered a PDF file pattern before… is it easy to figure out from a 8×10 sheet of paper?
This one only has one pattern piece, so it’s super simple! For other patterns that require multiple pieces, they are generally pretty simple and have great instructions for taping the pieces together. I’ve been impressed!
I love this nightgown and I have purchased the pattern, however I’m having trouble figuring out how to make the long sleeved version! The actual pattern only explains the short sleeved version, but as a beginner, I need help figuring out how to hem the long sleeves and where to fold the fabric when cutting out the arm holes. Any tips?
Hi Lorna! The steps for finishing up the sleeves are the same whether you make the short sleeve, the 3/4 or the long sleeve, so I hope that helps with that part! You hem them exactly the same. As far as where to fold the fabric when cutting out the armholes I’d have to have it right in front of me to make sure. If I remember correctly it will be folded along the long edge, forming a rectangle and then you’d line up the pattern piece with the shorter end.

I see the long sleeve elastic is the same as the other lengths. Wrists are smaller. Have you found the long sleeve too loose at the wrist? I tried to adjust the elastic smaller for the wrist but the width of the sleeve was too big then.
Hi Pam! I have definitely noticed this as well with the longer sleeve vs. short and 3/4 length. I just left it as is and my girls didn’t care, but it’s worth tinkering with next time.
