My girls are all about making fun, crafty things. They had a blast making their own lip gloss out of crayons and coconut oil. Not only are the colors vibrant, but it also works and feels amazing on your lips!

    Why I Like This Project

    • Inexpensive: You can easily make it for free because you probably already have the ingredients on hand.
    • Easy for kids to make: Kids ages 8+ can easily make this lip gloss on their own or with minimal supervision. I was busy getting ready for company that was coming that weekend, and was pretty impressed with how they were able to make this crayon lip gloss all on their own!
    • Fun to give as gifts: The lip gloss turned out darling and paired with a tiny brush makes the perfect gift for a friend. Make a set in a variety of vibrant hues!

Counter with a container of crayons and a jar of coconut oil. Crayons and paint brushes were tossed around.

    Tips and Tricks

    1. Experiment with pigment and texture: You can use a small amount of shaved crayons or more, depending on how dark you want the gloss to be. We found that about 1" of a crayon worked well for each lip gloss container. It also gave the lip gloss the best texture as the wax in the crayon gave it structure.
    2. Get creative with lip gloss containers: We had some leftover lip balm containers from our DIY flavored drink-packet lip gloss. However, you can use any small container to store the lip gloss mixture.
    3. Do not overheat coconut oil: Start with 20-30 seconds. Overheating it won't affect the outcome of the lip gloss; it's more of a safety guide for children to avoid burning themselves from splatters.
    4. Do your own research: Crayons are non-toxic and typically made from paraffin wax and pigment; however, it is up to you to do your own research. Children who are tempted to eat crayons should not make this lip gloss. Children who are tempted to eat lip gloss should not be wearing lip gloss of any kind.

    Ingredients and Supplies

Plastic container with crayons and jar of coconut oil on counter.
    • Coconut oil: Use whatever kind of coconut oil you have on hand.
    • Crayons: No need to go out and buy new crayons. If your crayons are old, break off the tip and unwrap a clean section, about 1".
    • lip gloss containers: or any small container that you'd like.

See the how-to card at the end of the post for full information on supplies and quantities.

How To Make Crayon Lip Gloss

Small glass bowl with melted coconut oil and crayons.

Step 1: For each container of lip gloss you'd like to make, heat 1 teaspoon of coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl for 30 seconds. Stir 1" broken or shaved crayon bits into the oil and stir until melted and smooth. Heat for an additional 10 seconds, if necessary.

Small heart baking tray with containers of lip gloss inside.

Step 2: Pour lip gloss mixture into containers and refrigerate until firm.

This colorful crayon lip gloss is made from coconut oil and crayons. That's it! Such a simple activity for kids to make. You can add scents if you'd like and make them any color of the rainbow depending on what color of crayon you choose!

Step 3: Once firm, use your finger or a brush to apply the lip gloss to your lips.

They made 5 little containers, and I have a feeling they will continue until they have a whole rainbow of colors! They didn't add scents this time or glitter, but that would be super easy to do!

    Lip Gloss FAQs

How should I store homemade lip gloss?

Lip gloss can be stored at room temperature with a lid. Refrigerating it helps the melted coconut oil to solidify again. Once that happens, there is no need to continue to keep it in the refrigerator.

Can I add scents to crayon lip gloss?

You can easily add a drop of scented or flavoring oils to the coconut oil before mixing in the broken crayons.

Is it safe to use crayons to make lip gloss?

Crayons are non-toxic and typically made from paraffin wax and pigment; however, it is up to you to do your own research. Children who are tempted to eat crayons should not make this lip gloss. Children who are tempted to eat lip gloss should not be wearing lip gloss of any kind.
