We have chickens, therefore we needed chicken ornaments to hang on the tree. One for each of our chickens! The kids had fun painting our chicken ornaments and they look ADORABLE on our tree. My favorite part is that I didn’t paint a single one. They did such a great job and they look just like our cute flock.

Have you tried making ornaments out of baking soda? They dry smooth and bright white. You can leave the white or paint them with acrylic paint. We added a coat of spray paint to ours for a bit of shine.

3 chicken ornaments

Ingredients

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup corn starch
  • 3/4 cup water

Instructions

Just 3 ingredients!

  • Mix them together in a saucepan over medium heat until they resemble mashed potatoes.

NOTE: this Danish dough whisk is a must-have for making doughs. So much better than a wooden spoon!

  • Transfer the dough to your work surface and cover it with a damp cloth until it is room temperature.
  • Knead the dough until soft and smooth.

Chicken Cookie Cutter

  • Roll the dough out with a rolling pin NO THINNER than 1/4″. If they are thinner than 1/4″ of an inch they will crack. I know this from experience. You might still have a few hairline cracks and that is totally fine. You’ll cover those with paint anyway.
  • Cut out ornaments using a cookie cutter.
  • Let the ornaments dry 24-48 hours, turning every 8 hours to allow for even drying. You can also dry them in the oven, but I recommend letting them air dry (less chance of cracking).
  • Paint ornaments with acrylic paint and let dry.
  • Cover with a coat of clear spray paint, if desired. This adds shine and protects them.
  • Hang on a tree!

Notes

If the dough is too sticky while kneading, add a small amount of corn starch to your hands. You want the dough to be nice and soft to prevent cracking, so don't add too much. Just enough to be able to handle it without the dough sticking to your hands. I usually don't need to add any extra corn starch.

I don’t decorate for Valentine’s Day (still re I don’t decorate for Valentine’s Day (still recovering from Christmas 😂), but I always have holiday candy on hand! This year I filled the jar with petite sour hearts after hearing how amazing they are from @triedandtruemoms. They were right, we are all fans over here! Maybe more places will stock them now that they are in such demand. I ordered mine from @candynationusa (don’t waste your time looking on Amazon. They are charging twice as much for less candy).

Today we made our favorite green smoothie. It’s all about balance—-just kidding. We all know that’s a lie. I have like 10 healthy recipes on my site and 800 breads and desserts. 😂

Tip: when buying produce, buy extra to freeze. I buy an extra pineapple, an extra package of grapes, an extra bunch of bananas and an extra bag of spinach and freeze them for smoothies. I slice everything up and freeze it on baking sheets then bag it up. It makes it easy to grab a handful to toss into a blender. You can freeze entire bags of spinach too and add a handful to smoothies. I always blend my spinach and water first then add the rest of the fruit. No little spinach chunks in the smoothie that way. 🙌🏻

Tomorrow is all about gingerbread cookies for Sant Tomorrow is all about gingerbread cookies for Santa (although the Santa who comes to our house prefers sugar cookies. He can share these with Mrs. Claus). Ruby has them all picked out—-gingerbread boys, gingerbread girls, and ninja-bread cookies. Should be fun. Had to go out and get more molasses and it wasn’t easy to find! Everyone else must be making gingerbread, too!
