Make Hot Chocolate in a Slow Cooker!
This delicious hot chocolate comes together quickly and is full of real chocolate flavor. No packets or unsweetened cocoa powder here! The perfect pot of hot chocolate for a holiday hot chocolate bar! The beauty of using a crock pot is that it will keep the hot chocolate the perfect temperature for a gathering.
(Freeze dried mini marshmallows can be purchased here.)
If you’ve been around for a minute you know how much I enjoy a delicious cup of hot cocoa. Especially during the winter months and Christmas. Hot chocolate was made for December! We’ve made hot chocolate bombs—many times (you. may have seen our video floating around on Facebook), frozen hot chocolate, and have even made our own marshmallows. Have you ever tried hot chocolate sticks? They’re super fun!
Crockpot Hot Chocolate Ingredients
The ingredients are simple, yet indulgent. I’m normally not too picky when it comes to chocolate chips in cookies and baking, but when making chocolate fondue or hot chocolate I highly recommend using Ghirardelli or Guittard chocolate chips. They melt down better than Toll House chocolate chips.
- milk (whole or 2%)
- half and half
- milk chocolate chips
- semi-sweet chocolate chips
- vanilla
Add everything to your large slow cooker and heat on low for 2 hours or until chocolate chips have melted completely. Stir. Taste, and add more chocolate chips if desired. Keep on warm setting while serving.
One big batch makes 16 delicious mugs (cups) of hot chocolate. Start a pot before dinner and enjoy it with the family for dessert! This is also a GREAT way to serve a crowd or to set on the table at a hot chocolate bar with whipped cream, caramel sauce, and a variety of toppings like crushed candy canes and mini marshmallows.

Stove Top Variation
Heat milk and half and half in large pot on medium heat until it begins to simmer (stir/whisk to prevent scalding on the bottom of the pan). Remover from heat. Stir in vanilla and chocolate chips and continue to stir until chocolate has melted.
How to make whipped cream from heavy cream
Homemade whipped cream is so easy to make. All you need is 2 tablespoons of sugar and 1 cup of heavy whipping cream. I like Alton Brown’s tip for chilling the bowl before beating the cream. Whisk until the cream has stiff peaks. That’s it!
Reheating slow cooker hot chocolate
Store leftovers in containers in the refrigerator. Mason jars work great. Reheat mixture in the microwave or, if you have a lot of hot chocolate to reheat, in the slow cooker on low heat until hot.
