I’ve done a lot of sewing for my girls. A LOT. It’s always fun to find a cute and cozy project for my little guy. This pocket scarf was so easy to make and he LOVES it. It keeps his neck and hands cozy and warm.

What Is A Pocket Scarf?

A pocket scarf can be made from a variety of fabrics. I actually first saw them made out of yarn. It is basically a scarf with a pocket added to the bottom for your hands. I’ve seen them with fringe, unfinished edges, and even cute appliqués. My version was inspired by Charmed by Ashley.

Fleece Pocket Scarf in Multiple Sizes

Because I have kids of all ages (4-17) it was easy to come up with a variety of sizes: toddler, child and adult. Use the cutting guide to get the measurements that you need for the size you’d like to make.

Everything You Need to Know Before You Begin

Time: 30 minutes

Skill Level: Beginner

Seam Allowance: 3/8″ (edge of pressure foot)

Stitch: zig zag

Pocket Scarf Supplies and Cutting Guide

fleece fabric, scissors, sewing clips and measuring tape

Supplies:

  • 1 yard fleece* (solid or non-directional print)
  • scissors
  • pins or sewing clips
  • measuring tape
  • sewing machine with walking foot attachment
  • needle/thread

*You won’t need the entire yard to make a pocket scarf, but I always buy a little extra. It is easiest to make these with solid or non-directional prints.

Cutting Guide:

Adult/Teen: 2 (58″ x 9″) strips of fleece, 4 (9″) squares of fleece

Child: 2 (55″ x 8.5″) strips of fleece, 4 (8.5″) squares of fleece

Toddler: 2 (50″ x 8″) strips of fleece, 4 (8″) squares of fleece

Tips For Sewing With Fleece

  • Zig Zag Stitch: Fleece has a bit of stretch in it. Use a small zig zag stitch to prevent thread from popping/breaking when stretched.
  • Walking Foot Attachment: A walking foot helps ease layers of fleece through the machine.

Total Time: 25 minutes
Yield: 1 scarf
Cost: $6

Equipment

  • sewing machine
  • measuring tape
  • scissors
  • sewing clips/straight pins

Materials

  • 1 yard fleece fabric solid or non-directional print

Instructions

Cutting Guide

  • Adult/Teen: 2 (58" x 9") strips of fleece, 4 (9") squares of fleece
    Child: 2 (55" x 8.5") strips of fleece, 4 (8.5") squares of fleece
    Toddler: 2 (50" x 8") strips of fleece, 4 (8") squares of fleece
two strips of fleece cut into long rectangles
  • Lay pocket squares on table. Place 2 squares together, right side of the fabric facing eachother.
    4 fleece squares
  • Sew the two squares together across the top.
Note: Use a zig zag stitch and 3/8" seam allowance (edge of pressure foot) for entire project.
hands feeding fleece fabric through sewing machine
  • Open square and fold over so that the seam is now inside and the right side of the fabric is on the outside. Bring the bottom corners together. Top stitch across the top of the pocket piece.
Repeat with other 2 squares of fleece.
You should now have two "pockets". Basically, squares of fleece with raw side and bottom edges, and top stitched across the top seam.

  • Lay one rectangle scarf strip onto your work surface with the right side of the fabric facing up. Place one of the pocket pieces over it, with the bottom corners lined up.
Place second rectangle strip on top, with the right side of the fabric facing down, sandwiching the pocket in between.
pocket placed over end of scarf fabric
  • Pin or clip the bottom and sides.
Repeat on the other end of the scarf strip, sandwiching the other pocket piece in between the top and bottom scarf pieces.
hand placing sewing clips around fleece scarf
  • Fold the scarf in half and find the middle. Mark a 6" opening with clips or pins near the middle of the scarf. This will be used for turning the scarf right side out after you sew around the perimeter.
edge of scarf closed with sewing clips
  • Sew around the perimeter, leaving the space between the clips open.

  • Trim corners and turn scarf right side out.

  • Fold the edges of the opening closed and pin into place. Hand stitch or machine stitch side opening closed.
Your fleece pocket scarf is now complete!

Notes

I highly suggest using a "walking foot" attachment for sewing multiple layers of fleece together.

I don’t decorate for Valentine’s Day (still re I don’t decorate for Valentine’s Day (still recovering from Christmas 😂), but I always have holiday candy on hand! This year I filled the jar with petite sour hearts after hearing how amazing they are from @triedandtruemoms. They were right, we are all fans over here! Maybe more places will stock them now that they are in such demand. I ordered mine from @candynationusa (don’t waste your time looking on Amazon. They are charging twice as much for less candy).

Today we made our favorite green smoothie. It’s all about balance—-just kidding. We all know that’s a lie. I have like 10 healthy recipes on my site and 800 breads and desserts. 😂

Tip: when buying produce, buy extra to freeze. I buy an extra pineapple, an extra package of grapes, an extra bunch of bananas and an extra bag of spinach and freeze them for smoothies. I slice everything up and freeze it on baking sheets then bag it up. It makes it easy to grab a handful to toss into a blender. You can freeze entire bags of spinach too and add a handful to smoothies. I always blend my spinach and water first then add the rest of the fruit. No little spinach chunks in the smoothie that way. 🙌🏻

Tomorrow is all about gingerbread cookies for Sant Tomorrow is all about gingerbread cookies for Santa (although the Santa who comes to our house prefers sugar cookies. He can share these with Mrs. Claus). Ruby has them all picked out—-gingerbread boys, gingerbread girls, and ninja-bread cookies. Should be fun. Had to go out and get more molasses and it wasn’t easy to find! Everyone else must be making gingerbread, too!
