This cute fabric basket with an easy close drawstring can be used for things like toys, a mini diaper bag and more. It’s a great baby shower gift! This post contains an affiliate link.
I started browsing online for a tutorial and found a darling drawstring fabric basket!
How great would a few of these be for storing toys? The tutorial was simple to follow and would be really easy to size up to make a bigger basket. You could even make a large one and add shoulder straps for a little backpack of some sort!
I quilted the outside in simple straight lines and used two fabrics that I’ve had for quite awhile. The fox print is from Joann’s and the polka dot was on clearance at Walmart for $1/yard last year. I really wish I had purchased more of it. I mean, $1 a yard? Why didn’t I buy the entire bolt?
Cinched up tight, this will be one gift bag that isn’t tossed or re-gifted!

Hi Brandy – I totally agree with you on that amazing moment when you find two fabrics in your stash that coordinate perfectly! Your pick looks fab on the drawstring basket bag.
I love your idea of making a gift which stores other gifts. I made a list of practical handmade baby shower gifts (http://www.sewinlove.com.au/2016/01/10/10-homemade-baby-shower-gifts-mamas-love/) earlier this year, and I think a reusable bag like this would make a very handy gift indeed.

What all did you do different from the original tutorial. I like yours much better.

Any chance you have a final bag size of the drawstring bag? I’m trying to decide if I need to make it bigger for more of a diaper/day bag for a mom to be!
Brandy says
Hi Jenna! I gave this as a baby shower present last year so I don’t have it in front of me to measure anymore. I’m sorry! It definitely wasn’t big enough to use as a diaper bag though. It would need to be about twice the size in both directions. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help! It’s a super cute style for a diaper bag though!
Lindsey says
I made one of these and I’m having trouble getting it to close fully at the top. It seems with the suggested channel size for the drawstring that it gets to bulky to folly cinch up. Does your close all the way?
Brandy says
Hi Lindsey! The ones I made cinch up pretty tight, but I kind of eye balled the channel size for the drawstring and it could be a little wider than the original pattern? I’m thinking that might be the reason.
Valerie says
Is there a trick to getting your bag to sit tall instead of falling into the basket? It looks like your sits taller than the ones in the tutorial and I am wondering if there is a way to replicate that? Thanks! Love the bag 🙂
Brandy says
Hi Valerie! Mine is sitting taller because I had a blanket inside to give it some shape for the photo. Just so that you could see what it looked like when it was filled with things. So if you have things inside your basket it will sit up taller. Hope that helps!
