    Frosted Root Beer Cookies

These root beer cookies are just plain fun. The cookies are soft and sturdy and the flavor is completely unique! They taste even better the next day, as the flavors have had a chance to meld. Bring them to your next party---they'll go quickly!

    Root Beer Cookie Ingredients

The cookie base is pretty basic. You'll need butter, shortening* sugar, eggs, molasses, all-purpose flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt. If you don't like molasses you can leave it out, but I like the color it gives the cookies and it adds a rich flavor.

*I like using a combination of butter and shortening in my sugar cookie recipes because I think it gives them the best texture, but you can use all butter if you’d like.

    bottle of root beer concentrate

The root beer flavoring comes from root beer concentrate. Some root beer concentrates are dark in color. The one that I used is clear.  Root beer concentrate is stronger than root beer extract. Two to three teaspoons are plenty of flavoring for the cookies. (In my video it says "extract", but I used root beer concentrate.)

The buttercream frosting is made from softened butter, powdered sugar, milk, vanilla, and a teaspoon of root beer concentrate.

How To Make Frosted Root Beer Cookies

root beer cookies on wire rack

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

In a medium bowl, cream butter, shortening, and sugar with an electric hand mixer or stand mixer. Beat in eggs. Mix in root beer concentrate and molasses.

In a separate bowl whisk flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt together.

Combine flour mixture with wet ingredients.

Scoop cookies, using a medium cookie scoop, and place on parchment-lined baking sheets (I usually bake 6 cookies per sheet).

Bake cookies for 13 minutes. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheets for 3-5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.

beaters with buttercream frosting on them

While cookies cool, go ahead and make the buttercream frosting.

Whip frosting ingredients together. Spread over cooled cookies.

Cookies can be stored at room temperature (covered with plastic or stored in an airtight container) or chilled. This recipe makes 28-30 cookies.

Delicious molasses brown bread similar to the one served at The Cheesecake Factory! This recipe makes 2 loaves, brushed with butter right out of the oven for the perfect flavor and texture. You'll LOVE this bread whether as part of a meal or as a snack! This post contains affiliate links.

    Cheesecake Factory Brown Bread

If you've been to a steak house or The Cheesecake Factory you know about brown bread. It's served in small loaves with butter and is soft and delicious with the perfect hint of sweetness. I like the bread served at The Cheesecake Factory, but I love this bread. I think it's better. I brush my loaves with butter right when they come out of the oven. It gives it a punch of flavor and a great crust texture.

two loaves of brown bread on wire rack

This is one of the only whole wheat bread recipes that I like, which says a lot! It took me a while to get the ratios just right, but my kids were happy to help taste test. I ended up using my Amish white bread recipe as a base, adjusting it to use a blend of white and wheat flour, adding cocoa powder and molasses to get the right shade of brown, more salt, and honey.

    bread dough in baguette pan

I bake mine in a baguette pan, which gives them a nice round shape, but you can also bake them on a greased baking sheet.

Make a couple of loaves to slice up and serve with dinner. This bread also makes delicious sandwich bread (mini sandwiches). Let's get started!

    Brown Bread Ingredients

(scroll to the end of the post for a printable version)

    • 1 cup of warm water
    • 1 Tablespoon. sugar
    • 1 packet dry active yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons)
    • 2 cups all-purpose or bread flour
    • 1 cup whole wheat flour
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1 ½ Tbsp. baking cocoa
    • 2 Tbsp. canola oil, vegetable oil (or olive oil)
    • 2 Tbsp. honey
    • 2 Tbsp. molasses
    • 1 egg white + 1 Tbsp. water (egg wash to brush on bread)
    • a handful of oats
    • melted butter for brushing onto finished bread

two loaves of brown bread on wire rack

How To Make Sweet Molasses Bread

(scroll to the end of the post for a printable recipe card with step-by-step instructions)

    1. In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water, and then stir in yeast at room temperature. Allow to proof until it looks like a creamy foam on top of the water (about 5 minutes).
    2. In a large mixing bowl combine all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, baking cocoa, and salt.
    3. Add water/yeast mixture, oil, honey, and molasses. Mix with a stand mixer or Danish dough whisk until the dough pulls away from the side of the bowl.
    4. Transfer dough to a floured surface and knead for at least 5 minutes (if you are using a stand mixer you can use a dough hook for 2-3 minutes). The dough should be smooth and elastic.
    5. Add a bit of oil to the large bowl. Place dough in bowl, turning once to coat. Cover with plastic wrap or a damp cloth and allow the dough to rise until doubled in size, 1 ½-2 hours.
    6. Punch the dough down and divide it into two portions.  Roll out each portion into a 12-14" loaf and place on a well-greased baguette loaf pan or baking sheet.
    7. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with oats. Cover with a damp cloth and let the dough rise for 30-45 minutes.
    8. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Bake loaves for 25 minutes. Brush with melted butter.
    9. Allow loaves to cool for a few minutes then transfer to a wire rack to cool.
    10. Store the cooled loaves wrapped in plastic or in a freezer bag.

    Notes

If you find your dough too sticky, add a ¼ cup of flour and go from there. If you find your dough too dry, add a bit more water (Tablespoon at a time). You want a dough that after it has been kneaded, is soft and smooth.
Bread will stay fresh for several days. Wrap in plastic or keep in a bread bag.

CAN YOU USE INSTANT AND DRY ACTIVE YEAST INTERCHANGEABLY?

For the most part, I use whatever yeast is available. Most of the time it’s the instant yeast that comes in a large package from Sam’s Club. When I use dry active yeast I add 10-15 minutes to the rise time. Technically you do not need to proof instant yeast, only dry active yeast, but I’ve gotten so used to proofing my yeast that I proof it for every recipe.

WHERE IS A GOOD PLACE TO LET THE DOUGH RISE?

A warm place is a perfect place for yeast to do its thing. I preheat my oven for 60 seconds then shut the heat off. I place my bowl of dough with a damp cloth or plastic wrap (that has been sprayed with non-stick cooking spray) covering it inside my oven.

The first thing you need to do is make up a batch of our no chill bakery-style sugar cookies and a batch of chocolate buttercream. My sugar cookie recipe is simply the best. The sugar cookie dough is flavored with vanilla extract and almond extract and tastes amazing!

You'll also need chocolate sprinkles and small white candies, white chocolate chips, or tiny round sprinkles to decorate the bandolier.

    Frosting Tips and Supplies

    Cookie cutter

You'll need a gingerbread cookie cutter. You can use any size you'd like. The cookie cutter that I used was about 4" tall and made 16 cookies.

Frosting tip to cover the cookie: 1A

The 1A frosting tip is a large round tip. It makes frosting cookies quick and easy! If you don't have one you can spread the frosting over the cookies with a spoon or a butter knife.

Frosting tip to add the Wookiee bandolier: #5 or #7

Tips 5 and 7 are small round frosting tips. Either one will work.

    Disposable frosting/piping bags

A disposable piping bag is convenient to have and you can just toss it after using.

    Kitchen Sink Cookies

I love kitchen sink cookies. They are exactly what they sound like---adding everything but the kitchen sink to the cookie dough. The possibilities are endless with these cookies. Simply use whatever you have on hand: pretzels, potato chips, toffee bits, caramel, chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, M&Ms, nuts. Because I patterned these after Panera's kitchen sink cookie I stuck with caramel, chocolate, and pretzels. The perfect sweet and salty combo.

panera kitchen sink cookie on parchment paper

This recipe makes over 3 dozen regular-sized cookies or 20 jumbo-sized cookies. I like making jumbo-sized (¼ cup of cookie dough). Large, but not overwhelming. These are the size of cookies found at a bakery. I like to eat them warm because the caramel is soft and gooey. On day 2, pop one in the microwave for 5-8 seconds. Perfection.

You can also make these with toffee bits instead of caramel. Equally delicious.

    kitchen sink broken in half

You can use dark chocolate chips or semisweet chocolate chips. Make sure to add milk chocolate too for the perfect combination. The caramel bits that I used are the same ones that I use for our star crunch cookies. KRAFT makes them and you can find them in the baking aisle. A pinch of salt on top of each cookie takes them to the next level. I use kosher salt or sea salt flakes.

    Kitchen Sink Cookie Ingredients

    (scroll down for printable recipe)

    • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • 1 cup butter
    • 1 ¼ cup brown sugar
    • 1 cup white sugar
    • 2 large eggs + 1 egg yolk

    • 1 cup semisweet or dark chocolate chips
    • 1 cup milk chocolate chips
    • ¾ cup chopped pretzels
    • ¾ cup caramel bits
    • kosher salt for sprinkling

How To Make Kitchen Sink Cookies

These cookies can be made with a Danish dough whisk, electric hand mixer or stand mixer. It's a big batch of cookie dough with lots of mix-ins so I like using my stand mixer with the paddle attachment to make the cookie dough.

    4. Stir in flour mixture and mix until just combined. Mix in chocolate chips, pretzels, and caramel bits.
    5. Scoop dough into ¼ cup balls. (If you are using a medium cookie scoop use two scoops then roll them together to create a dough ball).
    6. Sprinkle cookie dough balls with kosher or sea salt, if desired.
    7. Bake 3-6 cookies per sheet for 14-15 minutes.
    8. Cool 2-3 minutes on a cookie sheet and transfer to wire racks.

Note: if making regular-sized cookies, use a medium cookie scoop (2 Tbsp. size) and bake 6-9 cookies per sheet for 12-14 minutes.

Bristol Point Wooden Swing Set (Video)

    May 2, 2022 By Brandy 2 Comments

bristol point swing set with 2 slides

At long last, we took the plunge and added a swing set to our backyard. One that will inspire outdoor and imaginative play for years to come. Sharing all of the details about the Bristol Point wooden swing set from Backyard Discovery. I did my research and reached out to Backyard Discovery to see if they'd like to partner with me on this backyard project.

Backyard Discovery generously provided me with an exclusive, one-time discount code of 15% off site-wide! This is one of the few discounts they will offer site-wide this spring and it is only good for 48 hours. That means if you have been considering a playset, pergola, gazebo or playset now is the time to snag one! They have playhouses and playsets starting at just $300! Use code: GLUESTICKS15.

Facebook post from back in January: "Mac has been daydreaming about having a treehouse. We don’t have any trees older than 5 years, but I overhead someone encourage him to still come up with a design and they’d build it together. ❤️"

He got to work drawing the treehouse of his dreams and Dad started thinking of some ways to make it happen for him. A free-standing "treehouse"---without a tree, haha. Mac was excited about the possibility!

We've been in the military for over 20 years, moving every few years, so adding a giant play structure or treehouse to the backyard didn't seem practical, knowing we'd just leave it for the next homeowners. Now that we have plans to stay put for a while I started looking at some sets. Maybe a playhouse built upon a platform with a ladder? I had also selected a giant A-frame steel set that I thought would be perfect for the yard. Just swings. Then the idea came to combine the a-frame swing set idea with a "treehouse" aspect for Mac. What we needed was a swing set with an attached playhouse! I worked with the lovely folks at Backyard Discovery to find the perfect set that even my 10-year-old could easily play in and enjoy.

The DREAM set was found, ordered, and assembly began! We were in luck that Backyard Discovery had the Bristol Point wooden swing set in stock. It's one of their most popular sets, and for good reason! It's such a great all-around set for families. I'll share some others that we considered at the end of the post, at various price points. After scouring their site it was easy to see that they have something for every backyard size and budget.

Bristol Point Wooden Swing Set Assembly

Suggested Assembly: 2 people, 8 hours + 3 hours for the tube slide

The first thing I did after going heart eyes over this set was to consult our in-home contractor. After all, I wasn't going to be able to assemble this set by myself, and honestly, I wasn't going to be much help to him. Derrick agreed to assemble it with the help of our teenage boys. The set came in a few large boxes with the slides packaged separately. 16 (yes, 16!) of the panels were preassembled, and everything was cut to size and pre-drilled with holes for easy assembly.

The instruction manual rates this as an intermediate project for two people that would take on average 8 hours for the set plus a few more hours for the tube slide. My best guess is that it took 12-15 hours for the set and 3 hours for the tube slide, but my husband was essentially building this on his own with my boys helping him lift and move the heavier pieces. They worked on it over the course of 4-5 afternoons and evenings. If he had two adults working on it the entire time I'm confident it would have been closer to the estimated assembly time.

    BILT® Assembly App

Derrick mentioned a few times that it isn't a hard set to assemble, it just has a lot of pieces. He was impressed with the instructions and the step-by-step interactive BILT® app, and actually used the app quite a bit for clarification on certain steps and different views/angles. It also talks to you! I wish a certain Swedish company would take the plunge and create an app like this for their furniture assembly, haha. The manual divides up assembly into phases and has plenty of diagrams to help with each step. They really thought of every detail to make assembly as easy as possible.

    Quality and Customer Service

Tip #1: Immediately register your new swing set with Backyard Discovery. This will speed up the process if you need replacement parts in the future.

Tip #2: Take an hour or two and organize everything before beginning construction. Sort the screws and bolt packages and stack the wooden panels and slats. Inspect each piece of wood and check for cracks or damage that occurred during shipping. If the weather is nice, spread everything out onto the patio. This will save time in the long run.

Tip #3: Take time to level out your yard and take adequate measurements to endure that there is a proper safety area around the swings, slides, and rock wall. We learned this lesson the hard way. After starting to assemble the set we realized that we had measured for everything except for the swing clearance. If our kids were to jump off of the swings they would have landed ridiculously close to our concrete patio! We had to regroup and find another area to put the swing set with plenty of clearance.

Tip #4: To keep your wooden swing set looking new, consider protecting the wood with a water protectant once a year. I am going to do this to ours next month. The instruction manual gives suggestions on what types of products to use. Not only will this keep the wood from excessive weathering, it will also keep the warranty intact.

We were impressed with the overall quality of the wood and parts that came with our swing set. Upon inspection, we noticed that a couple of the boards had been damaged during shipment and we were missing a few bolts. I e-mailed Backyard Discovery and let them know which parts needed replacements. In less than an hour a customer service rep replied letting me know that the parts were on their way, no questions asked. Our parts arrived in less than a week.

    Favorite Features

I've worked closely with the Step2 company for the past 6 years and added many of their products to our home. The quality and customer service are unparalleled. Backyard Discovery is a sister company to Step2, but I was still pleasantly surprised to see that they incorporated Step2 products into the accessories! The signature stove with power blender and pots and pans set, which is in a lot of their kitchen sets, also came with this swing set!

mini grill, dinner bell and other features of swing set

The Bristol Point swingset includes a darling grill with plastic food (hot dogs, condiments, and utensils), as well as a sink and stove. It also includes two chalkboards, a dinner bell, a steering wheel, and a telescope (Mac's favorite feature)!

two sings and a monkey bar

The swing portion includes two belt swings, as well as a trapeze swing.

    bristol point swingset in backyard

Not only does the swingset include a long wave slide, but it also includes a tube slide. It's like having a park in your backyard! There are 2 balcony areas, a small hinged door, and cute craftsman details like the eaves, wooden roof, and windows.

rock wall on swing set and child swinging on a swing

If you go around to the back you'll find a rock wall and ladder, with plenty of handles, for easy climbing.

bristol point swing set from backyard discovery

(We installed ours on top of a concrete slab, which is not necessary, but we thought would protect the wood over time. You can also place your set right onto the lawn or mulch.)

We're at kind of a strange phase of life. I have a child in preschool, another in elementary school, one in middle school, and two in high school (one of them is graduating high school this year!). I'm anticipating this set not only being enjoyed by my children and neighbor friends, but also grandbabies.

If you like the sweet and salty combination of caramel, these caramel frosted sugar cookies are for you! A soft sugar cookie frosted in the most delicious caramel frosting. Serve chilled or at room temperature. They are heavenly!

These caramel-frosted sugar cookies are absolutely decadent and delicious. The buttery caramel frosting takes them up a notch for sure. Frosted sugar cookies are my favorite kind of cookies, and switching up the frosting flavors is an easy way to elevate them.

    Caramel Sugar Cookies

These cookies start with a snickerdoodle cookie (without being rolled in cinnamon and sugar). Snickerdoodles make the perfect base. They are sturdy enough to frost but super soft on the inside.

    Cookie Ingredients

    • ½ cup butter
    • ½ cup shortening
    • 1 ½ cups sugar
    • 2 large eggs
    • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
    • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • ¼ teaspoon salt

caramel sugar cookies on parchment paper

    Cookie Instructions

    1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
    2. Cream butter, shortening, and sugar with an electric hand mixer or stand mixer. Beat in eggs.
    3. In a separate bowl whisk flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt together.
    4. Combine flour mixture with butter mixture.
    5. Scoop cookies, using a medium cookie scoop, onto cookie sheets lined with parchment paper. I usually bake 6 cookies per sheet.
    6. Bake for 12 minutes.
    7. Allow cookies to cool for 3 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.

    Caramel Frosting

The caramel frosting is the same that I used for my caramel cinnamon rolls (that only take 90 minutes to make!). It's best to start the frosting before you begin making the cookie dough or make it while the cookies are baking and cooling since it needs a little time to cool. The butter and brown sugar are heated on the stove and boiled before adding milk and letting it cool back down to room temperature. Then powdered sugar is beat into the caramel mixture to create the perfect frosting consistency.

    Caramel Frosting Ingredients

    • ½ cup butter
    • 1 cup brown sugar
    • ¼ cup milk
    • 2 ½ cups powdered sugar
    • 5-6 teaspoons milk

    spatula with caramel frosting

    Caramel Frosting Instructions

    1. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add brown sugar and bring to a boil, stirring frequently. Reduce heat to medium-low and allow the mixture to simmer, stirring occasionally, for 3-4 minutes or until it looks amber in color and slightly frothy (watch my video to see what mine looked like). It may take more or less time, depending on different pans and stoves.
    2. Add ¼ cup milk, stir, and bring the mixture back to a boil for one minute, stirring frequently.
    3. Remove caramel from heat and allow to cool to room temperature (about 30 minutes). The mixture will thicken slightly as it stands.
    4. Transfer cooled caramel to a mixing bowl. Beat in 2 ½ cups of powdered sugar and 5-6 teaspoons of milk into the caramel and mix until smooth and creamy.

    What Is Boston Cream Pie?

Boston cream pie isn't a pie at all, it's actually cake! Pies and cakes used to be baked in the same pans and the words were sometimes used interchangeably. Boston cream pie has a spongey cake base and is filled with pastry cream and then topped with chocolate ganache. Boston cream pie cookies are a fun twist on the classic dessert. Instead of a cake base, they have a cookie base. Instead of pastry cream, they are spread with a pudding and cream mixture. The thing that stays the same is the chocolate ganache. Chocolate ganache adds a touch of decadence to every recipe that it is used in and it's easy to make! It starts out soft but sets up nicely for a soft chocolate shell texture.

    hand holding boston cream cookie

This recipe makes 28-30 cookies, and because they are frosted with vanilla pudding and whipped cream they should be stored in the refrigerator. The chocolate ganache shell adds a nice texture balance to the creamy pudding.

While the pudding chills let's make the chocolate ganache.

Microwave glaze ingredients in a microwave-safe bowl for 30 seconds. Stir. Microwave an additional 15-20 seconds. Stir until melted and smooth.

Spoon pudding mixture over the center of each cookie. Spread.

    • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • ¼ teaspoon salt
    • 8 oz. container jimmies rainbow sprinkles**

*I like using a 50/50 combination of butter and shortening in my sugar cookie recipes because I think it gives them the best texture, but you can use all butter if you'd like.

**I prefer using jimmies sprinkles vs. nonpareils sprinkles. The colors stay vibrant even after baking and don't bleed.
