Make a Scrunchie in 10 Minutes! (+ Video)

    variety of scrunchies

How to make a scrunchie in 10 minutes! This step-by-step tutorial will have you making fabric scrunchies like a pro!

Once you've mastered the basic scrunchie you might want to try making a stash scrunchie (scrunchie with a zipper on the side!). You might also like our tie-dyed scrunchies or our bunny ear (tied) scrunchies!

Watch our step by step video before starting this sewing project!

Make a Scrunchie In 10 Minutes!

One of the first things that I ever learned to sew was a scrunchie. My grandma taught me how to make them and once I mastered it you couldn't keep me out of her scrap fabric box, haha! When I wrote my kids' sewing book I knew that I needed to include a tutorial for this 90's throwback.

    hand holding 4 scrunchies

The method I used today is slightly different that the one I used in the 90s, but it's just as easy. I make my zippered scrunchies the same way too!  Your first scrunchie might take you a little longer to make, but once you get the hang of it you'll easily be able to bust them out in 10 minutes or less.

    variety of scrunchies

If you have my kids' sewing book you might recognize this project. It's the same tutorial that I shared in the book!

    fabric, elastic, scissors and pins

    Scrunchie Supplies

The supplies are super basic! You'll need:

    • Fabric: see my cutting guide below for making scrunchies in 2 sizes. My favorite fabrics to use are quilter's cotton (this is the easiest to work with), muslin, knit, and lightweight denim.
    • Elastic: ¼" or ⅛" wide elastic is my favorite for making scrunchies.
    • Safety Pins
    • Pins
    • Scissors
    • Measuring Tape
    • Sewing Machine/Coordinating Thread

    Fabric Cutting Guide

Make scrunchies in two sizes with this guide! Note: I use a 9" piece of elastic for all scrunchie sizes. Only the fabric length and width vary.

Regular (this is the size that I usually make): 4" x 20"

Large (my stash scrunchies are this size): 4.5" x 28"

    Stash Scrunchie With Zipper

A scrunchie with a zipper pocket? When you think about it, a scrunchie is just an empty tube of fabric, cinched with a piece of elastic. Add a zipper and you have yourself a nice little pocket scrunchie!

What Does a Scrunchie With Zipper Hold?

These fabric scrunchies are fun to make and a great scrap fabric project! They make great gifts too. Here are some items that would easily fit inside a scrunchie:

Lip gloss, keys, rubber bands, money, earrings, bobby pins, and more!

You might be wondering if you can still wear the scrunchie if it has something inside of it and the answer is YES. I tried one on that had a tube of chapstick inside and was still able to hold my hair in a ponytail.

    Best Fabrics For Making Scrunchies

My favorite fabric to use for scrunchies is cotton. I always have scraps of quilting fabric around so that's my go-to, but knit, corduroy, lightweight denim, or muslin would work too. I used my basic scrunchie tutorial to create this updated version. These ones are bigger and just plain fun!

    DIY Scrunchie Supplies

Fabric: I listed my favorite fabric choices above. You'll need a 28" x 4.5" rectangle of fabric to make a zipper scrunchie.

Zipper: These are the zippers that I always order. I buy them in bulk and they are perfect for so many projects. It's easy to shorten a zipper so I prefer to have them too long vs. too short. You can use a metal zipper, but you'd have to shorten it by hand vs. using your sewing machine.

Elastic: ¼" elastic or ⅛" elastic is perfect for making scrunchies. You'll need a 9" piece.

Homemade Lemon Butter Mints (Easy To Make!)

yellow lemon butter mints on parchment paper

Lemon butter mints are the perfect combination of sweet and tangy. Made with simple ingredients they are easy to make and fun to eat!

You might also like our original old-fashioned butter mints recipe. They are so easy to customize with a variety of flavors and colors.

    lemon butter mints

Watch out step by step video!

Note: The video shows how to make original butter mints. The lemon ones are made in a similar fashion, just shaped a little differently.

    Lemon Butter Mints

Butter mints are often served at weddings and parties. They come in a variety of colors and are hard in texture until you pop them in your mouth and they soften. You might recognize them from restaurants. Many places will gift you one as an after-dinner mint. I remember them from my childhood because my grandma served them at her daughters' weddings. I remember sitting at my Aunt Julie's reception and snacking on mixed nuts and butter mints the whole time!

My kids love butter mints, especially my 11-year-old. These lemon ones are actually her creation! She used our original recipe and made it even better. I love how she shaped her little mints! I snapped some photos of the finished product, but she made these 100% on her own.

yellow lemon butter mints on parchment paper

Flavored with a bit of lemon extract, they are tangy and sweet. One recipe makes a couple of hundred mints. Perfect to store in a jar or freeze for later.

    Lemon Butter Mints Ingredients

(scroll to the end for a recipe card to follow)

Butter: obviously. You'll need a small amount of softened butter. I always use salted butter, but you can use unsalted butter if you'd like.

Sweetened condensed milk: You'll only need ⅓ of a cup. You can save the rest of the can of sweetened condensed milk by freezing it.

Powdered sugar: Powdered sugar brings everything together and helps form the dough.

Lemon extract: not to be confused with lemon oil. Lemon extract adds great flavor to these "mints".

Vanilla: Just a tad for rich flavor.

Food coloring: Optional, but gives the lemon mints a pretty pastel color.

lemon butter mints in a jar

How To Make Lemon Butter Mints

Beat butter until smooth and creamy with an electric hand mixer (or stand mixer with paddle attachment).

Add remaining ingredients (including a couple of drops of food coloring) and mix until a soft dough forms. If you need to add a little more powdered sugar to prevent the dough from being too sticky you can.

large frosting tip near butter mints

Lightly dust your work surface with powdered sugar (if necessary) and roll the dough to ½" thickness using a rolling pin.

Use the end of a frosting tip (1A size is PERFECT) and cut the dough into tiny circles. If you don't have a frosting tip, pinch the dough into 2" balls then roll each ball into a long rope and cut into tiny pieces using a pizza cutter.

You can eat the mints right away but definitely allow the candy to dry on parchment-lined baking sheets for 24 hours before placing it into a container. This will give it change to dry out a bit.

    lemon butter mints

Lemon mints are best when stored in the refrigerator after drying.

family history printable card with candy glued to the front

I learned something recently. I learned that there aren't many family history-themed printables for teens and even less with candy. I also learned that it isn't easy to come up with a pun for family history related to candy because most candy and treats that are tree-themed (ie: family tree) look like Christmas trees. I had to think outside the box a bit with these, but am happy with how they turned out.

now and later family history printables

My daughter and her friend were asked to lead a discussion and lesson on family history at the end of the month (5th Sunday). They are the youth family history consultants for our congregation. They are coordinating the lesson, and I'm helping with the handout---because this kind of stuff is fun for me!

A sweet reminder for the youth to do the work for their ancestors now, and to continue on as they become adults.

There really is something special about opening the Family Tree app and browsing the memory tab for our grandparents, great-grandparents, and beyond. My 6-year-old son loves learning about the great-grandfather that he was named after.

"Our grandparents watch—and wait—for us to identify them, be linked to them, and provide temple ordinances for them."

    Ding Dong Cake

Hostess Ding Dong snack cakes are a classic chocolate cake snack filled with marshmallow cream and covered in chocolate. Ding Dong cake is a fun twist. Made with a boxed cake mix, this Ding Dong cake is easy to make! Want to make your cake from scratch instead? No problem---check out my classic chocolate cake recipe! It's a great recipe and {almost} as easy as a boxed mix. I love that it is made from cocoa powder, but still has a rich chocolate taste.

ding dong cake on white plate

    Ding Dong Cake Ingredients

    Chocolate Cake

    • You'll need a boxed chocolate cake mix plus the eggs, vegetable oil, and water needed to make it (or use my classic chocolate cake recipe).

    Creamy Filling

    • The marshmallow cream filling is made from butter, vanilla, powdered sugar, and marshmallow creme.

    Chocolate Ganache

    • The chocolate ganache is made from semi-sweet chocolate chips and heavy cream. This gives the dessert an amazing chocolate flavor.

    bite of cake on fork

    Ding Dong Cake Instructions

(scroll to the end of the post for an easy-to-follow recipe card)

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

Combine cake mix, eggs, oil, and water in a large mixing bowl. Beat for 30 seconds using an electric hand mixer. Scrape the sides of the bowl using a rubber spatula. Beat an additional 2-3 minutes.

Pour cake batter into a greased 9x13" baking dish (or pan sprayed with cooking spray).

Bake the cake for 28-30 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean.

Allow the cake to cool completely.

sliced chocolate cake with chocolate ganache

Combine butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract and beat on medium-high speed with an electric or stand mixer until smooth and creamy. Stir in marshmallow creme by hand.

Spread over cooled cake then chill the cake in the refrigerator for 30-45 minutes (this step can be sped up by placing the cake into the freezer until the frosting is set). We want to make sure that the ganache doesn't melt into the frosting, but sits on top. So chilling/freezing the cake for a little while will accomplish that.

slice of ding dong cake on spatula

Pour chocolate chips into a bowl.

Heat cream in a small saucepan on the stove over medium heat until it starts to steam and bubbles appear around the edge of the pan. You just need to heat the cream, not boil it.

Pour the hot cream over chocolate chips and let sit for 3-5 minutes.

Stir (whisk) the chocolate and cream until smooth and creamy.

Remove the cake from the refrigerator or freezer, pour the ganache over the cake, and spread evenly with a rubber or offset spatula.

Chill cake for 30-45 minutes. The ganache will be soft, but won't stick to your finger if you touch it.

Slice the cake into 12-24 slices using a serrated knife.

fork poked into slice of chocolate cake

Cover the cake with plastic wrap to keep fresh. Leftover cake is best stored at room temperature and will last up to 5 days!

    What are Scotcheroos?

Scotcheroos are a Rice Krispies cereal-based treat that has been around for decades. The cereal is mixed with corn syrup, sugar, and peanut butter then pressed into a pan and spread with melted chocolate and butterscotch chips. Scotcheroo cookies are a fun twist on the classic treat.

It's no secret that scotcheroos are my favorite dessert and that my love runs deep with probably 6 variations of them on my site! I linked 3 of the recipes at the top of the post, but have you tried my no-bake Scotcheroo Peanut Butter Blossoms? How about my Scotcheroo Truffles. Seriously, it never ends!

    Peanut Butter Scotcheroo Cookies

My cookie version starts with soft peanut butter cookies with crispy rice cereal baked into the dough. The cooled cookies are coated in a layer of melted butterscotch chips and chocolate chips and chilled until set, making them easy to eat!

    These Cookies Are:

    1. Soft and delicious. A nod to the classic treat, but still a delightful twist!
    2. Everything you love about classic Scotcheroos but in cookie form. Peanut butter, Rice Krispies, butterscotch chips, and chocolate chips.
    3. Small and perfectly portioned to curb your sweet tooth craving. One recipe makes 5 dozen small cookies using a Tablespoon-sized cookie scoop. You can use a medium cookie scoop to make 30 larger cookies if you'd like, you'll need to add a couple of minutes to the baking time.
    4. Made with basic ingredients like butter, peanut butter sugar, vanilla, eggs, flour, salt, baking soda, and chocolate chips.
    5. Delicious the next day! They stay fresh for up to 5 days if stored in an airtight container. You can also freeze these cookies.

    Peanut Butter Scotcheroo Cookies Ingredients

Butter: I always bake with salted butter, but you can also use unsalted butter.

Sugar: I use a combination of brown sugar and white sugar for the perfect texture and flavor.

Peanut Butter: Creamy or crunchy peanut butter, it doesn't matter.

Eggs: Eggs add structure to cookie recipes.

Vanilla Extract: For flavor. Try our homemade vanilla extract!

Flour: All-purpose flour works well. You can also use bread flour if you'd like.

Salt and Baking Soda: For leavening and flavor.

Rice Krispies Cereal: Adding the Rice Krispies cereal adds the perfect crunch to each bite and is a nod to classic Scotcheroos.

Butterscotch Chips and Chocolate Chips: Classic scotcheroos are spread with melted chocolate and butterscotch chips so these cookies are too! It's such a delicious flavor combination. I use semisweet chocolate chips.

    How To Make Scotcheroo Cookies

peanut butter cookie dough in bowl

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a large bowl, cream together butter, brown sugar, white sugar, and peanut butter until smooth. Beat in the eggs and vanilla extract.

Mix in dry ingredients. Add the Rice Krispies cereal and mix by hand.

    peanut butter cookie dough balls

Line baking sheets with parchment paper.

Scoop cookies using a SMALL cookie scoop (1 Tablespoon-sized) onto the baking sheets.

Bake cookies for 10 minutes. Allow cookies to cook on the cookie sheet for at least 5 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.

Allow the cookies to cool completely.

Melt chocolate chips and butterscotch chips in a double boiler or microwave. I usually use my microwave and heat the chocolate chips and butterscotch chips for 30 seconds, then I stir and heat them for an additional 15-20 seconds. Every microwave is different, my advice is to go low and slow. Short intervals, stirring until smooth and creamy. DO NOT OVERHEAT CHOCOLATE.

Spoon a small amount of melted chocolate and butterscotch onto each cookie. Spread.

    Chill cookies until set.

12 Science Experiments for Kids to Spark Curiosity This Summer

July 11, 2023 By Brandy Leave a Comment

Here are 12 easy science experiments for kids. From dancing raisins to colored carnations, these experiments will spark curiosity and entertain kids with hands-on fun. So grab the kids, rummage through your pantry and junk drawer, and experiment!

carnations in vases of colored water

Between trips to the pool and family vacations, parents are always looking for ways to keep their kids occupied during the summer months.

The simplest objects can come in use; a cardboard box, a pile of leaves, a plastic bottle, or even a box of raisins. Did you know that raisins will bob up and down if placed into a glass of soda? It's true!

Kids activities and simple science experiments don't need to be complicated, and many of the best ones are made with basic household ingredients. For example, rock candy is made out of sugar and water, and oobleck is made from cornstarch and water. No need for a lab, fancy tools, or chemicals.

    1. Fizzing Colors

Baking soda and vinegar are a simple combination that creates a fizzy reaction.

Supplies: baking soda, food coloring, distilled white vinegar, and a small bowl.

Scoop a spoonful of baking soda into a small bowl. Add a drop or two of food coloring. Slowly pour vinegar over the baking soda and watch the colorful mixture foam and fizz!

Tip: Use two or three colors of food coloring and see what colors are created when the colors mix.

    2. Dancing Raisins

These dancing raisins will bounce until they run out of bubbles. For best results, use clear soda.

Supplies: raisins, lemon-lime (or any clear) soda, and a glass.

Place a few raisins into a glass or jar. Fill the glass with soda. The bubbles from the carbonated soda will surround the raisins, bringing the raisins to the surface before they fall back to the bottom of the glass and start the cycle all over again.

    3. Freaked Out Pepper

Watch as the pepper races to the edge of the bowl in this easy experiment. This experiment is one that kids will want to do over and over!

Supplies: water, black pepper, dish soap, and a shallow bowl.

Fill a shallow bowl or pie pan with water. Sprinkle the surface with black pepper. Squeeze a drop of dish soap onto your finger, then dip your finger into the water in the center of the bowl. All of the pepper will immediately rush to the edges of the bowl.

    4. Butter in a Jar

Homemade butter is an edible science experiment! Observe what happens when you shake the cream for an extended period of time, then spread the homemade butter onto a slice of bread.

Supplies: heavy cream, marble, and a small jar with a lid (baby food jars work well).

Fill a small jar halfway with heavy cream. Place a marble in the jar and secure the lid. Shake vigorously for 5-8 minutes. The cream will start as a liquid before thickening and finally separating. Drain off the liquid (buttermilk) and press the butter together.

Tip: You can do this experiment without the marble, but it will take longer.

    5. Colored Carnations

An easy science experiment and centerpiece all in one. Watch the colors rise through the stem like magic. Note: you can use celery instead of carnations if you'd like.

Supplies: water, food coloring, white carnations, and a jar or vase.

Fill a glass or small vase with water. Add 10-12 drops of food coloring and mix. Next, trim each carnation's stem at an angle and place it into the vase of water. As the carnations soak up the water, the color will begin to show along the edges of the petals. It will take a few hours to see the final result, but it is worth the wait.

Tip: Try this experiment with various colors to see which color creates the most vibrant carnation. The results might surprise you.

    6. Homemade Bubbles

Make bubbles this summer with this three ingredients recipe. On their own, water, glycerin, and dish soap are common everyday items. However, when mixed, they make a great bubble solution. You can adjust the recipe to make a large container that will last all summer.

Supplies: water, dish soap, glycerin, a jar, a bubble wand, or pipe cleaners.

Combine 1 cup of water, four tablespoons of dish soap, and a tablespoon of glycerin in a jar. When mixed, these ingredients turn into a bubble solution. Dip a bubble wand into the mixture, then blow to create bubbles.

Tips: Try making a bubble wand with pipe cleaners. You can bend pipe cleaners into all sorts of fun shapes. You can even blow bubbles with your hands. First, pour the solution into a shallow pan. Then, touch both thumbs and pointer fingers to create a circle and dip it into the bubble solution.

    7. Cornstarch Slime (Oobleck)

Is it a liquid or a solid? It's both. This fun slime (sometimes called oobleck) will slip through your fingers if you try to hold it, but it turns solid when you add pressure.

    Supplies: cornstarch and water.

Combine 1 ½ cups of cornstarch and 1 cup of water in a bowl. Mix with your hands. Add more cornstarch (up to ½ cup) as you mix to get the perfect consistency.

Tip: Cover your work surface with a plastic table to keep messes to a minimum.

    8. Does Smell Affect Taste?

People might sometimes mention that they struggle to taste food when congested or have a stuffy nose. Does smell affect taste? Let's find out.

Supplies: various foods with the same size and texture, blindfold, and paper to record results.

Tie a blindfold around the participant's head and have them plug their nose while sampling different foods. Were they able to correctly guess what they just ate? Did the food taste different without the sense of smell? Record your findings on paper and compare them with the whole family.

Tip: Candy (such as Skittles) is an excellent option since the pieces are the same size and consistency. Some foods, like a banana, would be easy to guess because of the texture and sweetness, even when blindfolded.

Smell Variation: Add a few drops of scented oil (peppermint) or vinegar to a cotton ball. Hold the cotton ball under the participant's nose instead of plugging their nose, and see if the scent distracts their taste buds.

    9. Fizzy Sidewalk Paint

Paint your sidewalks with this paint, then spray it with vinegar to watch it fizz. A fun activity for kids and a science experiment all in one.

Supplies: 1 box of baking soda (1 cup), ½ cup corn starch, warm water, a couple of drops of food coloring, vinegar, a bowl, cups or muffin tin, a small spray bottle, and foam paintbrushes.

Combine baking soda and cornstarch in a bowl. Add warm water until desired paint consistency is achieved (thicker is better). Divide the mixture into smaller bowls or muffin tins and mix in a couple of drops of food coloring in each cup. Stir. Paint sidewalks with sidewalk paint. Fill a small spray bottle with vinegar and spray the dried sidewalk paint with vinegar. Watch the paint fizz and bubble!

    10. Oil and Water

Watch what happens when you add droplets of colored water to a cup of oil. Do the two substances mix?

Supplies: baby oil (or vegetable oil), water, food coloring, clear cups, and a dropper.

Fill a small clear cup ⅔ full with baby oil. Next, fill a few small cups with water. Add food coloring to each cup of water to create different colors. Stir. Use droppers to move the colored water into the cup of oil. Observe what happens when you add the water to the oil.

    11. Swirling Milk

This simple experiment is similar to the Freaked Out Pepper experiment. Watch as bursts of color swirl on top of milk.

Supplies: milk, food coloring, cotton swab, dish soap, cereal bowl.

Fill a bowl with milk. Add a few drops of food coloring (use different colors) in the center of the milk (do not stir). Next, squeeze a small amount of dish soap onto the end of a cotton swab. Touch the end of the cotton swab onto the colors in the center of the bowl and watch them swirl. You can touch the end of the cotton swab to the colors a few times until the soap runs out.

    12. Rainbow Skittles

Create a rainbow of colors with two simple ingredients. Then, watch the colors slowly move together to create a beautiful sight.

Supplies: Skittles, water, and a white dinner plate.

Arrange the Skittles into a large circle in the center of a white dinner plate. Slowly pour a cup of water over the Skittles. The candy coating is made from sugar and food coloring and will dissolve once the water touches it, causing a rainbow of colors to appear across the plate.

Tips: Do this experiment twice, once with cold water and once with warm water. Which one reacts faster? Use a white dinner plate for the best results.

15 Ways Being a Minimalist Can Improve Your Life

July 7, 2023 By Brandy Leave a Comment

Many people are turning to a minimalist lifestyle to help improve their mood, boost their productivity and build stronger relationships with their family and friends.

Minimalism is a wide-ranging concept that doesn't have a rigid set of rules but instead uses guiding principles to challenge people to question their purchasing behaviors so that they can understand what has actual value in their life and what doesn't.

For many people, becoming a minimalist has massively improved their lives.

    What Is Minimalism?

There are a lot of different definitions of minimalism, but broadly, it is a lifestyle where you only keep the things in life which add value or meaning, and you declutter or remove everything else. The purpose is to get rid of any distractions, stop chasing a lifestyle of buying things you don't need, and increase the amount of time that you have to yourself. Ultimately, it's about making life easier and yourself happier in the process.

Minimalism is not emptying your home as much as possible to create physical space. You don't have to throw out that prized collection of books or your selection of scented candles just because you're trying to be 'minimalist.'

An item has a purpose if it is helpful, but it also has a purpose if it brings you joy, pleasure, or comfort. A photograph of your family does not have practical use, but it nourishes you emotionally. So, you must define 'purpose' with minimalism.

It is about being deliberate with your home and life and cutting out what you don't need to help clear your literal space and your headspace.

How To Get Started With Minimalism

To some, getting started with minimalism can feel overwhelming.

However, if you want to embrace minimalist living, you must start. And there are two key areas to focus on:

    • Getting rid of your existing clutter
    • Putting new habits into place to stop you from acquiring more things you don't need

The transformation into a minimalist lifestyle won't happen overnight, so feel free to take your time and work room by room. However, you need to ensure you have those new habits in place, too; otherwise, you'll clear out a space, and then while you work on another, you'll fill that first room back up with new things.

    When buying something, ask yourself:

    • Is this essential?
    • What value does it add to my life?
    • How will I feel if I don't buy this?

By making the simple change to question yourself over your buying decisions, you'll build the proper habits to make the minimalist approach become second nature.

    15 Benefits of Minimalism

Choosing minimalism can offer a wide range of benefits to your life. You may notice a change immediately, although some will take time to set in.

    1. Increase your happiness and satisfaction with life

One of the biggest reasons people adopt a minimalist mindset is because it makes it easier to enjoy life. You can focus more on richer experiences and suppress the urge to fill your home with possessions. This simpler life is appealing and, for some people, even spiritually rewarding.

    2. Improve your relationships with your family and friends

At the base level of just having less stuff in your home, you will have fewer distractions and, therefore, can build deeper relationships with your loved ones. The time you can now focus on them instead of on the things you own will be extremely valuable.

Taking the concept of minimalism to another level, you can also examine your bonds with people and remove any toxic relationships that don't add value.

    3. Enjoy more free space in your home

Owning fewer possessions means having more free space in your home. The aesthetics of this alone are pleasing, but it also means you can be creative with the blank canvas you'll now have – add more items that provide value or downsize your home. A tiny home can feel huge with minimalist interiors.

    4. Sleep better and feel more energetic

Removing the clutter from your life can be very soothing, and this can help you to enjoy quality sleep at night. You'll enjoy great peace of mind, with fewer harmful distractions as you wind down for sleep, helping to set you up for the best rest possible. In turn, this means more energy for the things you find valuable during the day.

    5. Enhance your creativity

Owning too many things can stifle your inspiration and easily distract you. Removing these obstacles can free up your creative self, allowing you to explore your hobbies and artistic flair. You could even put this time towards creating minimal art pieces that give you personal satisfaction and value.

    6. Improve your productivity and focus

Again, when you have fewer distractions in your home, you will benefit from a freer mind, and part of that will mean you can be more productive. A cluttered home is filled with procrastination potential, whereas a minimalist home is perfect for routine and focus.

    7. Spend less money

You will likely buy fewer things when you make the positive change to try a minimalist lifestyle. You shouldn't be spending as much money on new possessions because you'll only be purchasing those items that give you value.

    8. Buy higher quality products

While you're buying fewer material possessions, your bank account will grow. And this means that thanks to minimalism, you'll have more money to spend on the things you still need to buy, whether it's pantry staples or larger furnishings like stylish sofas. The stuff you acquire can be much higher quality, whether it's everyday necessities or the more significant buys in life.

    9. Spend less time losing things around your home

It may seem trivial, but don't let the five to ten minutes a day you spend looking for lost items fool you. They add up quickly. The average American spends 2.5 days every year looking for misplaced items. That adds up to over 192 days if you live the average American lifespan of 77 years. Fewer purchases mean less stuff filling your home, fewer places for things to hide, and spending your time on more important and enjoyable things than locating lost items.

    10. Lower your stress and anxiety levels

Studies have shown that a minimalist life approach can help lower cortisol in your body. Cortisol is a hormone that triggers stress and anxiety, and excessive levels can cause severe conditions such as depression, weight gain, and even heart disease.

    11. Stop comparing your success with others

Many people spend a lot of time comparing their achievements and failures to those of their friends and family. They frequently base these comparisons on possessions – who has the bigger house, the newer car, and so on. This isn't healthy, but minimalism helps to negate these feelings, again making you happier.

    12. Less cleaning and tidying around the home

Very few people actively enjoy cleaning and tidying, and if you choose a minimalist approach for your home, you won't have as much to do. According to the National Soap and Detergent Association, decluttering can reduce the amount of housework in the average home by 40%. Fewer objects mean fewer things to put in their place or to attract dust, so less cleaning is needed.

    13. Lower your impact on the environment

Minimalism also benefits sustainability. Every time you make any kind of purchase, you're impacting the environment. Old products go into landfill, new products have the packaging, and there's the cost of picking them up or shipping them to you.

    14. Kids enjoy a higher quality of play

One specifically for the parents here, but it's been shown that children with fewer toys tend to get more enjoyment out of them. This isn't about depriving your kids but making sure you don't paralyze them with too many choices. A smaller selection not only helps kids be more imaginative but also makes the job of toy organization a lot easier.

    15. Make healthier food choices

Being minimalistic around the home means organizing everything, including your fridge and pantry. When you don't keep stockpiles of wasted items and everything is arranged correctly, it becomes easier to make healthier food choices. Your brain is more relaxed and willing to choose the more nutritious options if they are prominent and easy to reach.

What Are The Challenges of Minimalism?

There are several challenges to minimalism – it is not something you can typically transition into immediately without any barriers or bumps in the road.

Some of the more significant challenges include the following:

    • It can be hard to let go of things you own, especially if you've had them for a long time
    • Retailers are very good at marketing and making you want something you don't really need
    • It can be time-consuming to remove the clutter from your life
    • It is a never-ending process that you must commit to for it to work

If you brace yourself for these challenges, then you can overcome them. But always keep being positive in your approach if you want to be successful.

Is It Cheaper To Be a Minimalist?

It can be cheaper to be a minimalist, but only sometimes. It depends on what you decide adds value to your life. Returning to the record collection example – if you have an expensive record collection that brings value and meaning to your life, you may want to keep building that collection but use minimalism to remove other distractions.

That's a good way of approaching it, but you may not save much money, especially if any cash you save on other things just gets poured into buying more records. Alternatively, you might use the money you save to buy better versions of the essentials you would be buying anyway.

Minimalism can be a cheaper lifestyle. If you stick to it and are strict, you won't buy as many possessions and can save money.

    Are Minimalists Actually Happier?

A minimalist life is not suitable for everyone. Some people will prefer the dopamine hit of making purchases and owning fancy things, and that's fine.

But many people will find that taking the minimalist approach to life boosts their happiness. It helps to reduce stress and allows people to focus on what is more important to them in life, appreciating relationships and experiences more.

If you think a minimalist life could suit you, why not start small and try one room in your home? If you feel happier when you finish that room, you can expand it to the rest of your home and see how much better you feel once you have decluttered your life.

Every family needs a classic go-to chocolate cake recipe and this one is ours. I've talked about my love in previous posts for my yellowed, broken-down, cover-less, paperback Betty Crocker cookbook that my grandma gave me when I was 14. Over 27 years later and it's still my go-to book for basic recipes. This chocolate cake recipe is an adaptation of the cocoa fudge cake in that cookbook, which is no longer in print.

    Classic Chocolate Cake

This classic chocolate cake recipe has basic ingredients that you probably already have on hand and is frosted in a decadent chocolate frosting. I like this cake and frosting recipe because I don't need baking chocolate or anything fancy. I make them with baking cocoa and the cake is rich and delicious and the frosting is chocolatey and creamy.

    chocolate cake with fork

    Chocolate Cocoa Cake Ingredients

    • Milk + lemon juice: I don't usually have buttermilk on hand so this is a great substitute. If you'd prefer to use buttermilk you can.
    • Butter: I prefer using butter over Crisco or oil. I think it gives the best flavor for baked goods.
    • Sugar: White sugar works great for baking cakes and balances out bitter cocoa.
    • Eggs: For stability and richness.
    • Vanilla: A splash of homemade vanilla extract for flavor.
    • Baking Soda: Baking soda creates soft and airy baked goods.
    • Salt: I typically use kosher salt for all of my baking, but you can use whatever you'd like.
    • Flour: I always bake with all-purpose flour, but you can use cake flour too. If using cake flour, add an extra ¼ cup.
    • Cocoa Powder (Baking Cocoa): I've made this recipe with regular baking cocoa and Hershey's Special Dark cocoa. Both are delicious, it just depends on what flavor you prefer! The photos shown here are from a cake baked with special dark cocoa.

    Creamy Chocolate Frosting Ingredients

    • Butter: Softened butter is beaten with the frosting ingredients for a creamy frosting. I always bake with salted butter, but you can use unsalted butter.
    • Cocoa Powder: special dark or regular cocoa.
    • Vanilla: Add a splash of vanilla for flavor.
    • Milk: You can also use heavy cream. Start with 2 Tbsp. and add an additional teaspoon or two if needed to get the consistency you want.
