Asian Inspired New Year's Eve Appetizers

    December 26, 2014 By Brandy 8 Comments

Asian Inspired New Years Eve Appetizers

When I think of New Year's Eve foods, I think of Asian foods. Egg rolls, fortune cookies, and other restaurant-inspired dishes. Today I am sharing a quick and easy New Year's Eve spread with homemade elements as well as pre-made dishes. Perfect to start out the New Year with a bit of good fortune!

Asian Inspired New Year's Eve Spread

I've shared several of my favorite Chinese dishes on here with you, and they are so delicious, but they take a lot of work! Especially egg rolls. For my spread I chose to purchase spring rolls and egg rolls and create a delicious sauce to accompany them.

Asian Inspired New Year's Eve Spread

I also made a batch of homemade fortune cookies! If you haven't made fortune cookies before, be sure to add it to your 2015 bucket list. They are easy to make and I think they taste so much better. The best part? You can customize the fortunes for any holiday or occasion.

Asian Inspired New Year's Eve Spread

Deliciously crisp wrappers, fresh cut vegetables, and hearty pork filled my egg rolls. My spring rolls were the vegetable variety and lighter. The perfect finger food for kids!

Asian Inspired New Year's Eve Spread

Tai Pai Egg Rolls and Spring Rolls come with a dipping sauce. Just pour into dipping cups and you are ready to go, but I'd like to share my favorite homemade dipping sauce. A tropical sweet chili sauce. Once you try it, you'll never use anything else! It is a recipe inspired by the dipping sauce that my dear friend, Lynne, makes with her homemade egg rolls.

    Tropical Sweet Chili Dipping Sauce

1 part pineapple juice 1 part V8 Splash Tropical Variety 1 part sweet chili sauce (found in the Asian section) cornstarch Heat pineapple juice, V8 Splash, and chili sauce in a saucepan until it begins to simmer. Quickly whisk in cornstarch, 1 tsp. at a time until it reaches desired thickness. Remove from heat. Allow to cool before serving. As a reference, I used ½ c. pineapple juice, V8, and chili sauce and 3 tsp. corn starch.

Asian Inspired New Year's Eve Spread

If you'd like to leave a bit of good fortune for your guests, be sure to make a batch of homemade egg rolls. This recipe makes a dozen or so. I share tips that helped me create perfect fortune cookies and a link to the recipe here.

Asian Inspired New Year's Eve Spread

Customize your fortune however you'd like! A simple "Happy New Year!" works great too.

Easy Candy Airplanes For Kids To Make

    December 22, 2014 By Brandy 4 Comments

These candy airplanes for kids are so fun to make. Great for class parties, birthday crafts and party favors! This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone.

Making candy trains (especially these cute Thomas ones) is one of my favorite holiday things to do! I remember receiving one as a child and thought it was just about the coolest thing ever. Lifesavers, a hershey kiss, a pack of gum, and starlight mints. Classic! My kids like making them too, and they make such great Christmas party favors. This year we not only made trains, but also planes! I think these little pinterest inspired planes turned out so cute and they were very easy to make. We made an entire fleet for Dusty, our favorite crop duster.

    Candy Airplanes

This was the first time my kids had tried Push Pops. They were fans. Ruby especially liked it because it looked like a little tube of lipstick. Love that girlie girl! We gathered all of the supplies we would need and got started. Don't worry, if you're looking for something a bit healthier---check out these adorable snack ideas using fruits and vegetables from One Little Project.

    Candy Airplanes

To make one of these adorable candy airplanes you will need the following supplies:

    • 1 Push Pop
    • 2 Lifesavers
    • 1 Stick of gum
    • 1 rubber band

    Candy Airplanes

    Instructions

Unwrap top section of Push Pop so that the clip is exposed.

Wrapping the stick of gum is optional, but I like the solid color as opposed to the gum wrapper so I just covered it with a piece of paper. I wrapped it like a little present and secured it with scotch tape.

Slide the gum underneath the clip.

    Candy Airplanes collage

String two life savers onto a rubber band.

Stretch it out nice and good so that it will wrap easily around the plane.

    Candy Airplanes

Start on one side and bring the rubber band up and over the clip.

Repeat on other side. The rubber  band sections will cross each other.

Straighten out the life savers (wheels) on the bottom.

    Candy Airplanes

You'll want to make a whole fleet of these little planes. They are so cute!

    candy airplane ornament

You can even add a hanger and put it on the tree (if you aren't worried about ants).

    Candy Airplanes

They also make great little party favors for any Planes fan! Have you seen Planes Fire & Rescue?  It was a cute movie! These candy airplanes would be perfect at a Planes themed party. Make them as a group, or give to each guest as they go home.

So now that I have shared one of my favorite childhood Christmas activities, what is yours? I'd love to hear what made Christmas special for you as a child or what you and your family enjoys doing now. So many wonderful memories happen during this magical time of year!

    Easy DIY Glitter Candles

I find that I burn candles so much more during the fall and winter months than any other time of year. A candle light adds such a cozy ambiance and my favorite candle scents are the holiday ones. Right now I am burning Glade's Apple Cinnamon Cheer scent and my home smells amazing!

Today I'm sharing these beautiful glitter candles that would be perfect for any winter tablescape. The coolness of the Hot Cocoa and Mint candles from Glade mixed with the sparkle of glitter adds a simple elegance. The best part? It is such an easy project that literally takes only a few minutes to make. Would you believe that no glue or modpodge is involved?

All you need is double sided tape and glitter. THAT'S IT!

    How to Freeze Baked Goods

    December 15, 2014 By Brandy 4 Comments

Tips and tricks for making and freezing baked goods. How to freeze pies, cookies and rolls. This especially comes in handy during the holidays! Bake a variety of treats in one day and freeze for parties and family dinners! This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. This post contains affiliate links.

Tips and tricks for making and freezing baked goods. How to freeze pies, cookies and rolls. This especially comes in handy during the holidays! Bake a variety of treats in one day and freeze for parties and family dinners!

If I am going to go through the trouble of baking one pie, I might as well make two, right? Or 6! I had a moment of insanity last month and made 6 apple pies to use up a box of apples we had. Half way into the process I wondered why on earth I would put myself through that.  5 went into the freezer for a rainy day and one went right into the oven. My kitchen counters took a beating, and my floors were sticky enough to give even the best mop a run for it's money...but it was all worth it. Why?

Fast forward one week later and we were invited over to a friend's house for dinner. I volunteered to bring dessert. What did I bring? You guessed it. Apple pie! The next week the  youth group at church were looking for volunteers to donate baked goods for a fundraiser. Sure, I've got that! I pulled out a pie from the freezer and an hour later had a hot apple pie to send.

With the holidays being such a busy (and WONDERFUL!) time, it is nice to have a few things tucked away in the freezer for last minute parties and dinners.

Today I am going to show you how to freeze pies, rolls, and cookies!

    How to Freeze Pies

make and freeze holiday baked goods

Freezing pies is incredibly easy and you still get that fresh from the oven pie, even months later! Instead of popping it in the oven, wrap with plastic wrap and then a layer of foil. Freeze.

When you are ready to bake it there is no need to thaw. Line a baking sheet with foil to catch drips, unwrap your pie, and bake  as you would any other pie.

    How to Freeze Rolls

make and freeze holiday baked goods

Rolls are a great item to have on hand in your freezer. You can bake ahead and freeze, or you can freeze dough balls for hot rolls on a future date.

To freeze, separate your dough into balls after the first rise. Fill up your baking sheet and then freeze. A deep freezer works great for large baking sheets of dough balls. Once frozen, remove from baking sheet and store in a large ziplock bag in the freezer.

When you are ready to bake them, place dough balls on a greased baking sheet. Cover in plastic wrap that has been sprayed with cooking spray to prevent it from sticking to the top of the rolls.  Let raise at room temperature until rolls double in size (about 3-5 hours depending on the temp in your kitchen). Bake as you normally would. My favorite rolls are these buttery dinner rolls that I shared last month.

    How to Freeze Cookies

make and freeze holiday baked goods

My grandma always had bags of baked cookies in her freezer. Chocolate chip cookies to be exact. You can bake cookies ahead and freeze, or freeze cookie dough balls. I prefer to freeze cookie dough so that I can have warm cookies straight from the oven.

Scoop dough and place on a baking sheet. No need to space them since you won't be baking them right now. Cram them all on the sheet and freeze until frozen solid. Store in ziplock bags.

When you are ready to bake them, simply remove from bag and space on a baking sheet. Bake as you normally would.

For rolled cookies, freeze cookie cut outs until frozen solid, store in a bag, and bake as normal. This works out great since my kids absolutely love decorating cookies. I can pull out a half a dozen gingerbread men and 10 minutes later they are out of the oven and ready to decorate.

make and freeze holiday baked goods

All of this lovely prepping and freezing isn't without its downfalls. (Note:  I did NOT make all of the rolls, cookies, and pies in the above photos on the same day. I'm not that crazy.) The day I made the pies my kitchen was absolutely trashed. Flour and sugar on the counters, sink and floors.

    holiday baking and freezing

And then the apples. The deliciously juicy apples that left their stickiness everywhere.

make and freeze holiday baked goods

I didn't do a great job making it to the trash can as you can see. Sometimes it seems like you spend as much time cleaning up as you actually do baking. It's a good thing I really like baking but, I don't want to be cleaning right now. I'd rather be looking at Christmas lights, taking the kids to see Santa, and visiting with guests. This holiday baking season I went and picked up a new mop to deal with my laminate floors and the sticky messes that plague them.

Mops are expensive and I hate finding a dud. My ProMist was a great deal and makes cleaning my floors super easy: Fill, Spray, Mop, and Wash.

After a quick sweep and dry vacuum to get rid of the dust and crumbs, I quickly mop my floors. I use a basic concentrated glass cleaner (mixed with water) to clean them and leave the streak free. After mopping I simply toss the pad into the washing machine. A quick and spotless clean up.

My kitchen was then clean...until it was time use it again! 😉

    DIY Winter Wonderland Ornament

    December 11, 2014 By Brandy 4 Comments

    Winter Wonderland Ornament

    Winter Wonderland Ornament

Ruby and I had fun creating a fun little Winter Wonderland Ornament together. We've had these little vintage looking wood ornaments for years and years. I thought they would be absolutely perfect to fit inside of a plastic ornament for a cute little wonderland scene!

    Winter Wonderland Ornament

I bought these ornaments at Walmart probably 8 years ago, but you can find mini ornaments at many places.  You can use several things to look like snow: Epsom salt, rice, poly-fill stuffing beads, or fake snow. The last time I was at Dollar Tree they had little bags of fake snow. Those would be perfect and lightweight to use in this project, but I had some kosher salt on hand so that's what we used. Kosher salt is heavier, but we didn't make this to hang on a tree (we used a little display stand for ours).

    Winter Wonderland Ornament

These plastic ornaments are $.97 at Walmart and are perfect for projects like this. You can fill them with candy too!

    Winter Wonderland Ornament

Ruby chose this little snowman for our ornament. I cut out a small cardstock tree and hot glued him to it. Just to add a little more color and dimension.

    Winter Wonderland Ornament

We filled the ornament half way with our snow then added the ornamet.

    Winter Wonderland Ornament

We secured it with a small dab of hot glue, and then hot glued the ornament cap on (for added stability).

    Winter Wonderland Ornament

She's dropped it twice, and aside from a bit of salt dust on the inside plastic, it's held up great.

    Winter Wonderland Ornament

A fun little addition to our Christmas decor this year.

Here is another fun Snowman ornament project that was the inspiration for ours!

Peppermint Ice Cream Pie Is The EASIEST Pie to Make!

This peppermint ice cream pie couldn't be any easier to make! A pre-made chocolate crust filled with sweet peppermint ice cream and crushed candy canes!

At every dental visit, the dentist gives the kids a gift certificate for a free scoop of ice cream at a local ice cream parlor. They love it! The last time they went to cash in their certificates Ruby decided to try peppermint ice cream (solely for the fact that it was pink). She loved it. I told her that I would get her more when it came out for Christmas in the grocery stores. It happens to be my favorite too.

That was two weeks ago and I was excited to see it on the shelves when we went to Walmart last week! It added a bit of excitement for this bored little toddler on an otherwise uneventful trip to the store. We decided to buy two cartons of Dreyer's Slow Churned Peppermint Wonderland ice cream. One to eat plain, and one to make a Peppermint Ice Cream Pie with. I absolutely love the peppermint pieces in the ice cream, it is such a refreshing flavor.

    Peppermint Ice Cream Pie

We also picked up some Nestle mini chocolate chips, a chocolate pie crust, and whipped cream. You'll definitely want to keep reading!

My mom used to make ice cream pies when I was a child and they were my favorite. I especially liked the mint chocolate chip and peppermint ones. I remember having an ice cream pie instead of a birthday cake for more than one birthday.

    Peppermint Ice Cream Pie

This is one of those recipes that is ridiculously easy to make, everyone loves it, and it looks a little fancy! Let me show you how easy it is.

    Peppermint Wonderland Ice Cream Pie

1 carton Dreyer's Peppermint Wonderland Ice Cream

    One chocolate pre-made pie crust

    1 can whipped cream

    1 candy cane, crushed

½ c. Nestle mini chocolate chips

    Peppermint Ice Cream Pie

Allow ice cream to sit out until soft enough for scooping and spreading smooth.

Scoop out entire carton into pie shell.

Spread smooth with a butter knife and freeze until firm.

Cover the entire top with small bursts of whipped cream.

Sprinkle with chocolate chips and a crushed candy cane.

    Freeze until ready to serve.

    Peppermint Ice Cream Pie

I love that it is no bake and would be so easy to make several to entertain guests this holiday season.

    Peppermint Ice Cream Pie

A childhood favorite that my kids can now enjoy too. It is one of their favorite desserts and they were more than happy to help finish off the entire pie after Kaylee's Christmas concert at school!

And as if a peppermint pie wasn't eye candy enough for you, here is a candy cane peppermint ice cream cake that I made for Aaron's birthday last year! He had an "Elf" birthday party and this was the Candy Cane Forrest.

Sweet, salty, and crunchy. Santa's white chocolate popcorn is absolutely the perfect treat to leave out on Christmas Eve!

It's no secret that I love to bake. My kids know this and will politely let me know when the cookie jar is empty. I like to make treats and they like to eat them. It's a win-win situation!  I especially like holiday baking and all of the fun seasonal add-ins that come with it! Like holiday colored M&Ms in all of our favorite flavors!

Today I am going to share two delicious holiday recipes that are perfect for sharing with friends. One is an old family favorite, and one is new! I will also share the easiest way EVER to package them up.

Sweet, salty, and crunchy. Santa's white chocolate popcorn is absolutely the perfect treat to leave out on Christmas Eve!

By the time Santa gets to our home he is sometimes tired of milk and cookies. The Santa who visits our home likes popcorn. This works out great because we are popcorn fanatics. So here is Santa's White Chocolate Popcorn Recipe! It's so delicious and addicting. We switched it up this time by adding M&Ms Holiday Baking Minis.

(Look at those cute little fingers. She was more than eager to "help" me with all of the candies.)

Prepare your popcorn in whatever way you like. I use my good old fashioned air popper. It will take 2 batches to prepare the entire cup of kernels.

Melt white chocolate chips in a microwaveable bowl for 45 seconds. Stir and continue to microwave in 30 seconds until smooth.

Pour over popcorn and stir to coat evenly.

Spread popcorn onto a large surface (counter/table) covered in parchment or waxed paper. Sprinkle with M&Ms.

Let sit until chocolate begins to set, about 10 minutes. Sprinkle lightly with sea salt, if desired.

Sample a few pieces just to make sure it's perfect. And it will be!

Do You Want to Build a Sock Snowman?

A quick and easy sock snowman for kids to make. No sewing involved! Fill with rice or pillow stuffing for a darling stuffed toy!

We always keep a few matchless socks around for crafting puppets or a sock snowman. We found this darling tutorial about 3 years ago for a sock snowman and have been making them every year since! This year we changed them up a little. Instead of a hat, they added a few strands of hair. Instead of a jacket, they added arms and coal. To make their own little version of Olaf (could you tell it was supposed to be Olaf?) I didn't do the greatest job with the facial features, but the girls loved them.

A quick and easy sock snowman for kids to make. No sewing involved! Fill with rice or pillow stuffing for a darling stuffed toy!

How to Make a Sock Snowman

To make one, simply cut the top off of a sock. You'll want the crew section, the longer the better.

Turn inside out and tie off with a rubber band.

Turn right side out and fill with rice.

Tie off a section in the middle (creating a body and a head) and tie off the top.

    Accessorize!

Now if you have girls like me, you know that girls like to accessorize. Everything. So the following photo may be a bit disturbing, but hey, it's what they do.

    My apologies, Olaf.
