    5-Ingredient Twix Cookies Recipe (Video)

Watch our step by step video!

If you like our frosted fudge shortbread cookies, you'll love our latest version---caramel and chocolate shortbread cookies. Twix cookies!

    Twix cookies on cooling rack

Our Twix cookies are made with 5 ingredients and are the easiest version around. This is because we used pre-made caramel dip! No melting down caramel candies and mixing in heavy cream (although you totally can do that if you prefer the flavor of caramel candy vs. dip).

Did you know that shortbread cookies are made with only 3 ingredients? Butter, powdered sugar and flour. That’s it! The main difference between a sugar cookie and a shortbread cookie is the density. Sugar cookies are lighter (made with baking powder), and shortbread cookies are more dense with a buttery taste. This makes it the perfect base for our Twix cookies.

two Twix cookies next to cooling rack of cookies

    Twix Cookie Recipe Ingredients

    • Butter: you must use butter. It is simply the best for making shortbread cookies.
    • Powdered Sugar: using powdered sugar results in a melt-in-your-mouth cookie.
    • Flour: all purpose flour works great.
    • Caramel Dip: found in the produce section at the grocery store. Use the leftovers for sliced apples or caramel cider donuts!
    • Chocolate Chips: milk chocolate is my preferred chocolate chip for these cookies, but semi-sweet or melting wafers can be used.

How To Make the Easiest Twix Cookies!

Step 1: Make the shortbread cookie dough.

Step 2: Roll out dough, cut out cookies with round cookie cutter and bake.

Step 3: Spread with caramel dip and melted chocolate.

    shortbread cookie dough

    Twix Cookie Shortbread Base

Combine ingredients in a large bowl using an electric mixer. The dough will resemble coarse sand. Turn the mixer off and form the dough into a ball with your hands. What first looked like coarse sand will end up forming a beautiful dough.

rolled out shortbread cookie dough and cookie cutter

This recipe makes 26-30 delicious shortbread cookies. I like making mine smaller (2″), but you can make them any size you’d like.

baked shortbread cookies on cooling rack

Cut out into small circles using a cookie cutter or biscuit cutter and place on an uncreased cookie sheet.

Bake at 325 degrees for 13-15 minutes. Let cool on baking sheet 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack. Cool completely.

container of caramel and bowl of chocolate chips

    Twix Cookie Toppings

Caramel layer:  The caramel dip is ready to go, no prep necessary.

Chocolate layer: Melt chocolate chips in the microwave (in a small microwave safe bowl) for 30 seconds. Stir. Heat an additional 30 seconds. Stir, and continue to stir until all chocolate chips are melted and smooth.

cookies with caramel and chocolate on cooling rack

Spread each cookie with about a teaspoon of caramel followed by a teaspoon of chocolate.

Optional: sprinkle with sea salt after adding chocolate.

Chill cookies in the fridge for 20-30 minutes, or until chocolate firms up.

Store cooled cookies at room temperature in an airtight container.

Watch our step by step video!

I love a good double chocolate loaf of bread. The bits of chocolate on top and inside are a must. And, let's be honest, this is anything but bread. This is a decadent dessert/cake. Loaded with chocolate chips and Andes mints, this double chocolate loaf is perfect for chocolate mint lovers and tastes delicious.

sliced loaf of andes mints bread

    Double Chocolate Andes Mints Loaf

The key to a delicious moist loaf of bread is NOT over baking the bread. The sweet spot for this loaf is between 45 minutes and 50 minutes of baking time. Let it stand in pan just long enough to sprinkle chopped Andes mints over the top, then remove from the pan and let cool. The easiest way to transfer the bread from the loaf pan to the rack is by lining the pan with parchment paper before baking, and lifting the parchment paper to release the bread after baking.

Let the loaf cool before slicing. Serve slices warm (heat in microwave for a few seconds for gooey chocolate) or room temperature (for chocolate chunks).

If you want to take it up a notch, serve slices warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

    Andes Mint Bread Ingredients

    • 2 eggs
    • ½ cup butter: melted
    • ¾ cup sugar
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 cup (8 oz.) sour cream
    • 1 cup all purpose flour
    • ½ cup cocoa powder
    • ½ teaspoon baking powder
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • ¼ teaspoon salt
    • ¾ cup chocolate chips: divided
    • Andes mints: 1 box of candies, unwrapped and chopped

How To Make A Double Chocolate Andes Mint Loaf

Line a 9"x5" loaf pan with strips of parchment paper, making it easier to transfer the baked loaf to a cooling rack. Lightly spray the paper with non stick cooking spray.

chopped up andes mints candy in bread batter

Mix eggs, sugar, melted butter, sour cream and vanilla together in a large mixing bowl.

Combine dry ingredients and mix into wet ingredients.

Add ½ cup chocolate chips and ½ cup chopped Andes mints candies and stir. Spoon/pour batter into prepared baking pan.

Sprinkle with ¼ cup chocolate chips.

Bake for 45-50 minutes at 350 degrees.

baked bread with andes mints chopped and sprinkled on top

As soon as the loaf comes out of the oven sprinkle with ¼ cup Andes mints (chopped). Let cool 5 minutes then lift the parchment paper to release the loaf from the pan and transfer to a wire rack.

Store leftover slices in an airtight container. Reheat in microwave for 5-8 seconds for a warm, gooey slice.

    Knit Nightgown Sewing Pattern

I love sewing for my girls, but generally work with quilting fabrics. I like sewing with knits, but don't have near as much experience with them. And I don't own a serger.

When Abby, from Sew Much Ado, was looking for pattern testers for her brand new Bellamy nightgown pattern I put my hesitation aside and dove right in.

Now I want to sew with ALL THE KNITS. This darling nightgown came together in a little over an hour. The step by step instructions were fabulous, the perfect quickie sewing project without ANY notions!

This nightgown is so soft and stretchy and Kaylee absolutely loves it. She likes the longer length and sleeves, but you can actually make this nightgown in a variety different variations in length and sleeve styles. If making Christmas pajamas is a tradition that your family has you'll love this pattern and will be able to use it for years and years!

The Bellamy Nightgown PDF Pattern is all you’ll ever need in a girl’s nightgown pattern! Featuring options for loads of different styles like sleeveless, short sleeves, or long sleeve, and a variety of bottom hem options for below knee length or ankle lengths, it’s truly the only custom nightgown pattern you’ll need year-round!

Made out cozy knit fabric and featuring a ruffled hem, this will be your little girl’s favorite new nightgown!

5 tips for sewing with knit fabrics

You don't need a double needle or serger to finish the raw edge. A sewing machine and ball point needle work just fine.

    1. Use a ball point needle. A ball point needle has a round tip and won't pierce or tear your fabric. This is important when working with stretchy fabrics.
    2. Use a long zig zag stitch. I made mine about as long as my machine would let me. It almost looked like a straight stitch, but if you looked closely you'd see a zig every few stitches, giving the seam a bit of stretch. I've learned this by experience. I made myself a maxi skirt YEARS ago and used a regular straight stitch. One stretch of the skirt and the entire seam broke and came apart. So, always use a zig zag or stretch stitch.
    3. Press every seam and use the steam function on your iron. This is my favorite trick working with knits. The steam really makes for a nice finished look and helps the knit maintain its shape.
    4. Do not stretch your fabric as you sew (unless the pattern tells you to).  Let your machine guide the knit fabric through to avoid stretching and bunching. Again, something I've learned years ago by experience.
    5. ALWAYS pre-wash knit fabrics. ALWAYS. I used a 2-way stretch that I purchased at Joann's. I bought an extra yard just to make sure that I'd have enough because knit fabric will usually shrink up a bit during the first wash. It definitely did, about a half a yard's worth.

I’ve purchased and used many pdf sewing patterns over the years and this one, by far, was the easiest to follow. Abby outdid herself and was very thorough in drafting this easy-to-follow nightgown pattern.

It isn’t very often that you find pretty nightgown for girls in the store these days. So many of them are plastered with licensed characters on the front. I love that I can make a lovely handmade nightgown in their choice of knit and get creative with pretty lace or ruffle hems if I want! I can’t wait to make more nightgowns for my little ladies!

Make a Filipino Parol lantern out of paper and a few basic craft supplies!  Use the free start template to make a 3-D star. Making a Filipino Christmas lantern is an expression of shared faith and hope.

I shared this darling craft with my friends at the Little Passports website in 2016 and am excited to share it with you guys today! Parols are so bright and a sweet reminder of the holiday season.

    Filipino Parol Lantern

    Filipino parol lanterns

    Beautiful image via.

"In the Filipino language, a Christmas lantern is called a parol. There's no greater symbol of the Filipino Christmas spirit than the parol. All through the Christmas season, star-shaped lanterns can be found hanging outside homes and along the streets of cities and small provincial towns, farms and fishing villages. For Filipinos, making a parol, decorating one, and lighting a parol is an expression of shared faith and hope." ---SOURCE: Sa Ngalan Ng Gobyerno

A parol represents a light in the darkest of night, just like the star of Bethlehem that guided the three wise men (three kings) on that Christmas Eve night. I am not Filipino, but love what the parol stands for. We could all use more light and reminders of goodwill this time of year, and shiny Christmas stars are full of holiday spirit.

white star parol with curling ribbon

Parols have a star shape and are traditionally made out of bamboo sticks and Japanese paper (or cellophane) and have a lighting feature. Our parol lantern craft does not light up, but you can add battery lights to it if you'd like. It's just a simple craft for kids to make when learning about Filipino culture. You can add lots of glitter to make it sparkly and shiny.

Step 4: Decorate however you’d like. You can even have the kids use stamps, markers, or crayons to create fun designs. We used glitter. To do this, run glue along each fold.

Step 5: Sprinkle in glitter and let dry.

    December 9, 2021 By Brandy 9 Comments

    handprint ornament on christmas tree

Baby's first Christmas ornament needs to be special. A way to document just how tiny they were that first year. This glitter handprint is an adorable way to do that! A growing family will soon have a collection of adorable handprint ornaments on their tree! This post was originally shared in 2011.

You might also like our thumbprint reindeer ornament (the perfect ornament to make with preschoolers!) or our baking soda ornaments! You can even turn baby’s footprint into a little reindeer. You can put it on a canvas!

    Baby's 1st Christmas Ornament

Baby girl needed an ornament for the tree. Something that would capture her tininess this year! Handprint ornaments are my favorite to do to capture these tiny moments, but they do require a bit of patience. Ruby was a good sport and super patient....at first. I had to work quickly because she just wasn't having it after the first two attempts. New baby hands are naturally clenched in little fists most of the time so it was a little tricky to paint, but we still got a nice little print.
You can make these with toddlers and little kid handprints too. Just find an ornament a little larger. What a fun keepsake gift to make for a new mom or dad, or send a grandparent for Christmas in a small gift box. My favorite thing to do each holiday season is pull out all of our handmade ornament and hang them on the tree. Preschool photo ornaments, popsicle stick frame ornaments, and pipe cleaner ornaments---they are better than any store bought decoration.

How To Make a Handprint Glitter Ornament

    handprint ornament on tree
    DIY Ornament Supplies
    • Ornament (glass, plastic, or porcelain ornament---I used glass ornaments)
    • Fine glitter (not basic craft glitter, you want it to be fine and more powdery)
    • Mod Podge
    • Small paint brush
    • Permanent marker

    Instructions

Step 1: brush a layer of mod podge onto baby’s hand then press the hand against the ornament.
Note: It might not be easy to get baby's handprint. Just do the best you can. Basically, we're looking for an outline of a hand. Because you are using a wipeable surface you can always wipe the mod podge off with a wet wipe and start over if needed. Good luck---it's worth it!
Step 2: If it isn't a perfect print you can fill in any areas with a small paint brush and a bit more mod podge.
Step 3: Sprinkle fine glitter over the handprint. Shake off excess glitter and let the ornament dry.
Step 4: Write the birth year and baby's name on the back with a permanent marker. If there's room you can add baby’s birth stats or a special message.
Step 5: Hang on the Christmas tree with a ribbon or ornament hanger!

Kaylee loved how Ruby's turned out and wanted one too. Hers took about 30 seconds start to finish. Much easier since she knew what was going on.
The glitter adhered perfectly to the mod podge. I thought I might have to add another coat over the top, but I don't think that is necessary.

UPDATE: It's been 10 years since I made this sweet keepsake and they look just as good as the day we first made them. The glitter and mod podge have held up beautifully! It's easily my favorite ornament and a little trip down memory lane every time I pull it out of the holiday decorations.

    What is peppermint bark?

Peppermint bark is one of my favorite holiday traditions. Made out of peppermint candy (candy canes or starlight mints), white chocolate and dark chocolate. There is a layer of dark chocolate followed by a layer of white chocolate. The festive peppermint flavor comes from crushed candy canes either sprinkled over the white chocolate or mixed into the white chocolate. The crunch from peppermint and the smoothness of the dark chocolate is the perfect combination.

My favorite peppermint bark has always been the signature Ghirardelli peppermint bark squares, so my recipe today is based off of those---with the peppermint candy crushed and mixed into the white chocolate. This irresistible flavor is a limited edition that comes out at the start of the holiday season, but with this recipe you can make them whenever you'd like.

    bowl of peppermint bark cups

    Ghirardelli Peppermint Chocolate Bark Cups

You'll need 3 ingredients and a few basic supplies that can be picked up the next time you go out for groceries. Peppermint bark can be made on a parchment paper lined baking pan and broken it into pieces, but I like making mine in mini baking cups---they are the perfect size, and you can pickup a pack in the baking or cake decorating aisle.

You can use a silicone chocolate mold to get the peppermint cup shapes if you have one. My chocolate mold only has 10 cavities so I used mini baking cups liners instead of making multiple batches of melted chocolate. Quicker and easier.

    bowl of peppermint bark cups

My recipe makes 24 peppermint bark cups and can easily be doubled or halved, depending on how many you'd like to make. You can store these in the refrigerator or on the counter. I recommend storing these at room temperature. It keeps the chocolate slightly softer, making it the perfect texture to bite into.

tray of mini muffin cups and chocolate chips

    Peppermint Bark Ingredients

    • Ghirardelli chocolate melting wafers*
    • Ghirardelli white chocolate melting wafers or white chocolate chips*
    • Mini candy canes

*Note: you can use almond bark cubes (dark and white) if you'd like, but my favorite kind of chocolate to use for melting is Ghirardelli melting wafers or chocolate chips. I often use it for making English toffee and hot chocolate sticks because I prefer the taste and perfectly smooth consistency.

How To Make Peppermint Bark Cups

    bowl of Ghirardelli chocolate wafers

Step 1: Line a baking sheet with 24 mini baking cups.

Step 2: Melt chocolate in a heat-proof bowl for 30 seconds. Stir. Continue heating in 15 second intervals until smooth.

Step 3: Pour chocolate into frosting/pastry bag or Ziploc bag. Cut the corner of the bag to create a small opening. Note: You can also simply spoon the chocolate into the mini baking cups if you don't have a pastry bag.

Step 4: Fill each mini baking cup with a tablespoon or two of chocolate. Each cup should be about ⅓ full. Tap baking sheet against the countertop to flatten tops and even out chocolate. Let stand 10 minutes.

Step 5: Crush candy canes with a rolling pin or meat tenderizer.

Step 6: Melt white chocolate in microwave-safe bowl for 30 seconds. Stir. Continue heating in 15 second intervals until smooth. Stir crushed candy canes into white chocolate.

Cranberry Orange Scones With Orange Glaze (Video)

    November 30, 2021 By Brandy 2 Comments

    cranberry scones on parchment paper

Cranberries, freshly squeezed oranges, and cold butter are the key ingredients to this deliciously light and fluffy cranberry scones recipe. You’ll love the sweet and tangy flavor combination. Perfect for a holiday breakfast or brunch! This post contains an affiliate link.

    Cranberry Orange Scones

There’s nothing better than a warm home-baked pastry on a Saturday morning. I love comfort foods, especially this time of year. Muffins, quick breads, scones---I don't discriminate.

I never cared for scones until I started making them myself. They always seemed so dry! I used the same recipe that I've used for years for making blueberry scones, and swapped out a couple of ingredients to make a delicious cranberry version. Tart cranberries, sweet orange juice, and a finger-licking-good glaze. Don't skimp on the glaze, it is a great balance to the tart cranberries.

You can make these with fresh, frozen, or dried cranberries. I like using fresh cranberries because they are easy to find this time of year and I love the flavor. If you use dried cranberries you can use less of them. They are sweeter, too. I'd probably use half the amount of cranberries if using dried.

For the orange flavoring you'll need the zest from one orange, and ¼ cup of orange juice for the glaze.

    scones on parchment paper

    Cranberry Orange Scones Ingredients

    • 2 ¼ cups all purpose flour
    • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
    • 2 teaspoons baking powder
    • ½ teaspoon baking soda
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • orange zest (from 1 orange, about 1 Tablespoon)
    • 1 stick of butter (COLD)
    • 1 cup fresh cranberries (can also use frozen or ¾ cup dried)
    • 1 egg
    • ¾ cup milk

    Glaze

    • ¼ cup orange juice
    • 1 ¼ cup sifted powdered sugar
    • 1 teaspoon honey

How To Make Cranberry Orange Scones

    1. Mix dry ingredients together in a medium bowl. Add orange zest. Add frozen, grated butter. Blend with a pastry cutter (can also pulse in food processor).
    2. Stir in berries.
    3. Beat milk and egg together and mix into the flour mixture until dough forms. It will be STICKY.
    4. Press dough onto floured surface and form a 10-12" disc. Cut into 8 triangles/wedges.
    5. Bake scones on a baking sheet for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
    6. Mix orange glaze ingredients and drizzle glaze over slightly cooled scones.

    grated cold butter

    COLD Butter for Scones

Cold (or frozen) butter is the KEY for making delicious scones. Grate 1 stick of COLD butter using a cheese grater, and place it in the freezer while you gather the rest of your ingredients and preheat the oven. As soon as you're ready to add the butter to the dry ingredients, pull it out of the freezer. It will be the perfect temp for blending into the flour.

fresh cranberries in bowl with dry ingredients

Once the dry ingredients and orange zest have been mixed, and the butter blended into it, add the cranberries. Toss the dry ingredients with the cranberries.

Mix the egg and milk together then stir into your dry ingredients.

A dough whisk is my favorite kitchen tool. It mixes scone dough, muffin batter and bread dough like a champ!

    sticky cranberry orange scone batter

    Scone Dough is Sticky

Scone dough is sticky, that's normal. Sprinkle flour over your work surface, and hands, and press the dough into a disc.

    scone dough cut into triangles

Cut into 8 triangles with a knife.

    unbaked scones on baking sheet

Use a spatula to transfer scones to a baking sheet, lined with parchment paper. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes.

While the scones slightly cool, mix glaze ingredients together. Drizzle (generously) scones with glaze. Serve warm. The glaze will soak into the warm scones.

    scones on parchment paper

Warm, sticky, sweet, tangy---these scones are perfection!

Store leftover scones in an airtight container and warm leftovers in the microwave for a few seconds.

    Optional Add-Ins for Scones

This recipe is delicious on it's own, but here are some yummy variations that you can try.

    • Add a handful of white chocolate chips to scone batter.
    • Add a small amount of vanilla extract or orange extract to the batter.
    • Brush unbaked scones with heavy cream and sprinkle with coarse sugar before baking.
    • Brush with melted butter right after baking, and before glazing.

    • 1 ½ cups cranberries fresh or frozen (¾ cup dried)
    • 1 egg
    • ¾ cup milk

    Icing

    • ¼ cup orange juice fresh squeezed
    • 1 ¼ cup powdered sugar sifted
    • 1 teaspoon honey

    • Pull the grated butter out of the refrigerator or freezer. Mash grated butter into flour mixture with pastry cutter or fork until it resembles coarse crumbs.
    • Fold in cranberries.
    • Beat egg and milk with a fork in a small bowl. Stir into flour/cranberry mixture.
    • Gently turn out dough on a floured surface and press into a 10″ round disc with your hands or a rolling pin. You don’t need to knead or work the dough. The less you handle the dough, the better. Flour your hands or rolling pin if you need to since it is a sticky dough.
    • Slice into 8 triangles.
    • Bake at 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes on parchment lined (or greased) baking sheet.
    • Cool 5 minutes before drizzling with orange glaze.
    • For the glaze: Combine ingredients and drizzle over scones. Glaze will soak into warm scones.
